Alterações e avaliação das funções do olfato e do paladar em laringectomizados totais: revisão sistemática

Abstract: The aim of this study was to systematically review the alterations in smell and taste functions in individuals who underwent total laryngectomy, as well as to identify in the literature some aspects involved in the evaluation of these functions in this population. We performed a systematic review on the databases Medline, LILACS and SciELO, and this data search occurred in October/2010. The search used keywords and free terms, and retrieved 84 articles, 79 from Medline, via Pubmed, and five form LILACS and Sci… Show more

“…There was a significant correlation between hyposmia and dysgeusia, as was found in our study as well. All the patients with taste problems from Caldas’s study also had a reduced ability to smell 6. In our study, 37 out of 40 patients with dysgeusia had a decreased or absent olfaction ability.…”

“…According to a systematic review of the literature dealing with the functions of smell and taste after a laryngectomy, there is a consensus that the inability to make air flow through the nose to reach the olfactory epithelium is the main reason for the deterioration of these functions 6. In addition, some authors reported changes in the nasal mucosa and olfactory system that can also affect the ability to smell in laryngectomized patients.…”

“…It is important to highlight the lack of studies on the characterization and assessment of this function in South America, and especially in Brazil, although there are Brazilian review articles in which scholars relate total laryngectomy to smell/taste alterations and assessments and the rehabilitation of these functions (22,23) . The population studied in the articles selected for this review was chiefly composed of healthy children (16)(17)(18)20,21) , probably because there are no normative standards that allow for comparisons between healthy and sick populations.…”

“…Speech therapy is included in publications on the treatment of laryngeal cancer, in studies dealing with rehabilitation of functions related to communications (in this case, especially oral communication) [22][23][24][25][26][27] , evaluation of quality of life 9,12,25,[28][29][30] , swallowing rehabilitation 9,28,30 and alterations of smell and taste 31 . During the research it was also verified a considerable percentage of publications from the nursing sector related with the bio-psycho-social aspects directly linked to the rehabilitation and/or postoperative handling/care which the patients must be submitted to [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] .…”
