Advanced Methods for High-Speed Template Matching Targeting FPGAs

Abstract: Template matching is an important image processing algorithm for object detection and tracking tasks especially because of its very high accuracy. Yet, one major disadvantage of this algorithm is its very high computational effort due to its high complexity which results in low update rates using conventional software-based systems. Additionally, these systems are often afflicted by latency and jitter. Pre-calculating small and robust templates allows for using FPGA-based template matching as an approach to so… Show more

“…Although SAD-based FPGA circuit is simple, its object-locating precision heavily depends on the environmental lighting condition than other anti-illumination-variations algorithm. Local correspondence methods on FPGAs were successfully applied mostly in realtime stereo vision [19], [20] and seldom in visual tracking / servoing [21]. Some image-based registration techniques on FPGAs, such as Blob detection were adopted in robotic visual servoing [22]- [24].…”

“…Yet, one major disadvantage of this algorithm is its high computational cost, which results in low update rates using conventional software-based systems. To solve this problem, an advanced method for high-speed template matching based on field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) has been proposed [ 18 , 19 ]. For collaborative operation tasks using multi-manipulators, the sum-of-squared differences (SSDs) algorithm is employed to automatically and simultaneously track four probe tips [ 15 ].…”
