A revision of Trigonella sect. Ellipticae (Fabaceae) in Iran

Abstract: In this paper a key, descriptions and new results are provided for Trigonella sect. Ellipticae occuring within the area covered by the flora of Iran. Trigonella sect. Ellipticae comprises perennial herbs, becoming woody at the base, with standard as long as keel and pods glabrous or rarely covered with gray dense and appressed hairs. Trigonella lasiocarpa Ranjbar & Hajmoradi, T. binaloudensis Ranjbar & Karamian, T. stipitata Ranjbar & Joharchi and T. torbatejamensis Ranjbar are described and illustrated as new… Show more

“…On the other hand Ranjbar et al reported, the difference were observed between stem cross sections of T. elliptica and T. yasujensis. The outline of stem transverse section and type of parenchyma tissue in peduncle were pentagonal and spongy in T. yasujensis while in T. elliptica were sinuate and palisade-spongy respectively (Ranjbar et al 2012).…”

“…In previous study, anatomical characters have been compared between two species of Trigonella (Ranjbar et al 2012). The previous palynological studies were done on the pollen of Trifolieae tribe and some species of Trigonella (Gazar 2003, Taia 2004, Lashin 2006.…”

“…In Flora Iranica (Rechinger 1984) the genus is represented by 63 annual and perennial species in 12 sections. There are 27 annual species belonging to 11 sections of the genus Trigonella in Iran (Rechinger 1984, Hamzeh'ee 2000, Janighorban 2004, Badrzadeh et al 2009, Ranjbar et al 2012a, 2012b, 2012c. About 14 perennial species endemic to Iran belong to T. sect.…”

“…However, there has been very little study of anatomical properties. Those studies involving anatomy have focused on the perennial species, for instance Ranjbar et al (2012b), which used anatomical characters for reporting new species and intraspecific variation (Ranjbar et al 2010). Here we report the somatic chromosome numbers, and anatomical and morphological characters that allow T. bakhtiarica to be delineated as a new species distinct from, but closely related to T. aphanoneura Rech.…”

“…Ellipticae, pollen grains are elliptic to oblong with often perforate ornamentation. Some features are common to several species of the section, while others are unique (Ranjbar et al, 2012). The measurements of six pollen characters of the taxa studied are shown in Table 4, and the light micrographs are presented in Figure 4.…”
