Lead uptake and tolerance of Ricinus communis L.

Abstract: Phytoextraction is an important technique used for the decontamination of areas polluted by lead. Consequently, an understanding of the physiological responses to tolerance of tropical species subjected to increasing levels of contamination is fundamental before considering their use as phytoextractors in contaminated areas. The objective of this study was to assess the lead (Pb) uptake and the tolerance of Ricinus communis L. The plants were cultivated in nutrient solution in a greenhouse under controlled con… Show more

“…aokawa) plants (0.1) and turnip (0.30) (Santos, 2005). Higher F values (0.6) were obtained for maize plants grown in Oxisol samples treated with 2400 mg kg -1 de Pb (with and without EDTA) although for jack bean plants grown with increasing Pb rates (100 -400 μmol L -1 ) in the nutrient solution did not observe significant differences for F values (average 0.04) among treatments (Pereira et al, 2007;Romeiro, 2006).…”

“…Most studies on phytoextracting species were accomplished under temperate climate conditions. Under tropical conditions, jack beans have been reported as effective Pb phytoextractors (Romeiro, 2006;Pereira, 2005).…”

“…Such accumulation occurred with maximum efficiency in the range from 200 to 250 mg L -1 of Pb (Figures 2 and 3). Romeiro et al (2006) observed that castor bean plants cultivated under Pb concentrations from 0 and 400 μmol L -1 , in nutrient solution, accumulated ≈ 25,000 g kg -1 of Pb in root dry matter. In vetiver, great capacity of Pb accumulation in the roots and low translocation of this element to the shoots were shown by other authors (Alves et al, 2008;Andra et al, 2009;Danh et al, 2011), highlighting its great potential for Pb phytostabilization.…”
