Soil organic matter conservation, paramount in tropical agriculture, is affected by the composition of cultivated plant species and the input of dry matter and nitrogen into the system. However, SOM development in tropical soils managed under no-till in the long term is not well understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate SOM concentration and quality as a result of crop rotations under NT in two soils in Botucatu, Brazil, over a 10-year experimental period (2003-2012). Crop rotations including grasses and a legume grown in the fall/winter and spring were conducted for seven years in a clay Rhodic Hapludox. In a clay Typic Rhodudalf, crop rotations were compared with a fallow/chiseled treatment for 10 years. The cash crop was soybean grown every year in the summer. In both experiments, SOM lability was affected mainly by the spring crops. The absence of spring cover crops in chiseled treatments resulted in less total organic carbon in the 0.0-0.10 m soil depth. Soil concentration of TOC and its fractions were higher under crop rotations with higher nitrogen input, especially where sunn hemp was grown in spring. The strongest effects occurred in the Typic Rhodudalf, probably as a result of its higher clay content and the longer period under crop rotation. Under NT, the increase in labile and stable SOM is limited by the lack of cover crops in the spring or N availability. However, SOM humification degree is decreased with higher C input. These results highlight the importance of the use of cover crops and nitrogen inputs in soil conservation strategies and the sustainability of agricultural systems in the tropics. 2015 Elsevier B.V. Effect of soil compaction on shoot and root growth of maize cultivarsAbstract -The objective of this study was to evaluate shoot and root development of two cultivars of maize (Zea mays L.) (the hybrid AG-5011 and the variety Sol da Manhã), in soil submitted to four different levels of compaction. Plants were grown in pots with a medium texture distroferric Red Latosol. The pots were built with three rings of PVC superposed, with 14.5 cm internal diameter and 35 cm high, and the bulk density of the subsoil layer was adjusted for 1.28, 1.42, 1.56 and 1.69 Mg m -3 . Forty days after plant emergence, plants were assessed for the amount of shoot and root dry matter, root length density and root mean diameter. Soil compaction compromised both hybrid and variety, at the same intensity. In spite of altering the root system distribution along the soil profile, the subsoil physical impediment did not reduce total maize root production. Root mean diameter showed high correlation with root growth within the compaction soil layer. Roots of maize are not able to break compacted soil layer with 1.4 MPa of penetrometer resistance.
Soil potassium as affected by fertilization over the millet straw and simulated rainAbstract -This research aimed to evaluate K leaching through the soil profile, and its presence in the exchangeable and nonexchangeable forms, as affected by simulated rain and potassic fertilizer applied over the pearl millet straw left on soil surface. Pots filled with soil and pearl millet straw (equivalent to 8 t ha -1 ) in the surface received or not 150 kg ha -1 of K 2 O, as KCl applied over the straw. Rainfalls from 0 to 50 mm were applied. The soil was analyzed at several depths for exchangeable and nonexchangeable K. Pearl millet straw acts as an important K source, which is leached down to 4 cm depth when subjected to a simulated 30-mm rain. K leaching is positively related to the amount of rain; however, a 50-mm rain does not lead the nutrient down to more than 8 cm depth. The transformation of exchangeable K to non exchangeable K is very fast, as shown by the contents of non exchangeable K in the soil profile down to 4 cm. Index terms: Pennisetum americanum, K leaching, exchangeable K, nonexchangeable K, no-till.
Increased soil organic matter (SOM) improves the cation exchange capacity of tropical weathered soils, and liming is required to achieve high yields in these soils. Despite a decrease in SOM in the short term, liming may increase SOM with time by improving cation chemical bonds with soil colloids. Soil C may also be increased in high dry matter input cropping systems. We evaluated C changes in a Typic Rhodudalf as affected by four production systems with increasing residue inputs, with or without limestone or silicate. Soil use intensification by increasing the number of species in rotation as well as acidity remediation resulted in higher plant residue production. Introducing a green manure or a second crop in the system increased plant residue by 89% over fallow, but when a forage crop was used, plant residues more than doubled. Soil acidity amelioration increased plant residue deposition by 21% over the control. The introduction of a forage crop increased labile SOM and C contents in the particulate fraction, and lime or silicate application led to increases in the more stable SOM fraction. High amounts of plant residues (>70 Mg ha−1 in 5 yr) are effective in raising soil labile C, but the alleviation of soil acidity results in increased soil stable C irrespective of crop rotations in tropical weathered soils, and in this case plant residue deposition can be lower. Lime and silicate are equally effective in alleviating soil acidity and increasing soil C, probably due to the formation of cation bridges with soil colloids.
