Effect of soil compaction on shoot and root growth of maize cultivarsAbstract -The objective of this study was to evaluate shoot and root development of two cultivars of maize (Zea mays L.) (the hybrid AG-5011 and the variety Sol da Manhã), in soil submitted to four different levels of compaction. Plants were grown in pots with a medium texture distroferric Red Latosol. The pots were built with three rings of PVC superposed, with 14.5 cm internal diameter and 35 cm high, and the bulk density of the subsoil layer was adjusted for 1.28, 1.42, 1.56 and 1.69 Mg m -3 . Forty days after plant emergence, plants were assessed for the amount of shoot and root dry matter, root length density and root mean diameter. Soil compaction compromised both hybrid and variety, at the same intensity. In spite of altering the root system distribution along the soil profile, the subsoil physical impediment did not reduce total maize root production. Root mean diameter showed high correlation with root growth within the compaction soil layer. Roots of maize are not able to break compacted soil layer with 1.4 MPa of penetrometer resistance.
The nutritional requirements of crops, in general, becomes more intense with the beginning of the reproductive phase, being more critical at the time of seed formation, when considerable amounts of nutrients are they translocation, this requirement should be increased to the fact that nutrients are essential to training and development of new bodies of booking. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic efficiency of foliar application of zinc (zinc oxide Zn 700 g L-1 ) in bean plant, compared to leaf application of zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) and control (without application of Zn). The experiment was installed in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences - UNESP / Campus de Botucatu-SP. Was placed in containers with a capacity of 20L of soil and leaf applications encompassing four schemes and two of rain, with 5 replicates per treatment, a total of 40 vessels. The results for the factorial design did not show in general, significantly different answers when evaluated on the simulation of rain or the lack of simulation. The treatment (700g L-1 of ZnO) has demonstrated agronomic efficiency as its foliar application, with results equal or exceed the application of ZnSO4 and control when applied at the same dose of Zn
This study was undertaken in a 1566 ha drainage basin situated in an area with cuesta relief in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The objectives were: 1) to map the maximum potential soil water retention capacity, and 2) to simulate the depth of surface runoff in each geographical position of the area based on a typical rainfall event. The database required for the development of this research was generated in the environment of the geographical information system ArcInfo v.10.1. Undeformed soil samples were collected at 69 points. The ordinary kriging method was used in the interpolation of the values of soil density and maximum potential soil water retention capacity. The spherical model allowed for better adjustment of the semivariograms corresponding to the two soil attributes for the depth of 0 to 20 cm, while the Gaussian model enabled a better fit of the spatial behavior of the two variables for the depth of 20 to 40 cm. The simulation of the spatial distribution revealed a gradual increase in the depth of surface runoff for the rainfall event taken as example (25 mm) from the reverse to the peripheral depression of the cuesta (from west to east). There is a positive aspect observed in the gradient, since the sites of highest declivity, especially those at the front of the cuesta, are closer to the western boundary of the watershed where the lowest depths of runoff occur. This behavior, in conjunction with certain values of erodibility and depending on the land use and cover, can help mitigate the soil erosion processes in these areas.
