There is a lack of information about fertilization of pineapple grown in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. So a field experiment with pineapple 'Smooth Cayenne' was carried out to study the effects of NPK rates on yield and fruit quality. The trial was located on an Alfisol in the central part of the State of São Paulo (Agudos county). The experimental design was an incomplete NPK factorial, with 32 treatments set up in two blocks. The P was applied only at planting, at the rates of 0; 80; 160 and 320 kg/ha of P2 0(5), as superphosphate. The N and K2O rates were 0; 175; 350, and 700 kg/ha, applied as urea and potassium chloride, respectively, divided in four applications during the growth period. Response functions were adjusted to yield or to fruit characteristics in order to estimate the nutrient rates required to reach maximum values. The results showed quadratic effects of N and K on yield and a maximum of 72 t/ha of fresh fruit was attained with rates of 498 and 394 kg/ha, respectively of N and K2O. In order to reach the maximum fruit size, and to improve the percentage of first class fruit (mass greater than 2.6 kg), were necessary rates of N and K respectively 11 and 43 % higher than those for maximum yield. No effect of P rates was observed on pineapple plant growth, despite the low availability of this nutrient in the soil. The effect of N rates was negative on total soluble solids and total acidity while the opposite occurred with K, which increased also the content of vitamin C. High yield and fruit size were closely related to N and K concentrations in the leaves.
ABSTRACT GAS EXCHANGE AND CHLOROPHYLL FLUORESCENCE IN SIX COFFEE CULTIVARS UNDER ALUMINUM STRESSExperiments were carried out under greenhouse and growth chamber to evaluate the effects of aluminum (Al) on several photosynthetic characteristics in six coffee cultivars. Plants were grown in nutrient solution aerated continuously, containing two Al concentration, 0 and 0.148 mmol L -1 , supplied as Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . After 97 days of treatament, measurements of CO 2 assimilation rate (A), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), internal CO 2 concentration (Ci), instantaneous carboxylation efficiency (Φc) and chlorophyll fluorescence related characteristics were performed. All six cultivars showed decrease in A, gs and Φc and increase in Ci. The basal chlorophyll fluorescence yield (Fo) increased and the maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) decreased suggesting structural damage in thylakoid. The photosynthetic induction curve revealed that Al caused decreases in photochemical quenching of fluorescence as well as increases of non-photochemical quenching. Our results indicated that A reduction was related to decreases in both stomatal conductance, and biochemical and photochemical damages.
Identification of Al tolerant sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is important if this crop is to be grown successfully on acid, Al‐toxic soils. A rapid method for screening genotypes for Al tolerance was developed by growing over 100 plants in the same container of relatively small volume (50 ml/plant). Mineral element conditions that gave good differential responses for Al tolerance were 148 µmol liter−1 Al, 64 µmol liter−1 P, 7.4 mmol liter−1 Ca, 1.6 mmol liter−1 Mg, 3.9 mmol liter−1 K, 24.7 mmol liter−1 N (8 NO3−:1 NH4+), light (17 hours)/dark (7 hours) temperatures of 28/23 C, and solution pH values below 4.0. Mineral element levels or temperatures higher or lower than these resulted in poorer differential responses of genotypes to Al, either because Al had essentially no effect or Al effects were too severe. Nitrate as a single N source could not be used to screen for Al tolerance because the solution pH increased as plants grew and Al in solution was inactivated. A mixture of NO3− or NH4+ gave better genotypic separation than NO3− or NH4+ alone. Visual Al toxicity symptoms on roots were noted within 10 days, and seminal root lengths could be used to assess Al tolerance of sorghum genotypes. Differences in root and top dry matter yields did not distinguish sorghum genotypes for Al tolerance.
Phytoextraction is an important technique used for the decontamination of areas polluted by lead. Consequently, an understanding of the physiological responses to tolerance of tropical species subjected to increasing levels of contamination is fundamental before considering their use as phytoextractors in contaminated areas. The objective of this study was to assess the lead (Pb) uptake and the tolerance of Ricinus communis L. The plants were cultivated in nutrient solution in a greenhouse under controlled conditions. Lead was tested at concentrations of 0, 100, 200 and 400 µmol L -1 . The experimental set-up was a block design, using a 4 x 1 factorial scheme, with three replicates. Biometric analyses, photosynthesis rates, and Pb content in the nutritive solution as well as in roots and shoots were performed. In conclusion, R. communis L is a hyperaccumulator species for Pb and presents tolerance properties in lead light concentration.
Tomato cropping (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under protected cultivation using substrates and drip fertigation has improved sustainable production systems especially fruit quality and plant health. However, little is known for tomato plants when considering the interaction between substrate volume and irrigation frequency. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) fiber substrate volumes and drip irrigation frequencies on the vegetative growth and fruit yield of tomato plants under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks arranged in a 3 × 2 factorial with four replicates. Treatments consisted of three substrate volumes (5.0; 7.5 and 10.0 L per plant) and two irrigation frequencies (once and five times per day). Leaf area index tended to increase in plants grown with the largest substrate volume (10 L). Although substrate volumes affected shoot dry matter, no effects on tomato yield and its components were observed. However, plants grown with 5 L of substrate and irrigated once a day produced a greater number of non-marketable fruit due to the higher incidence of calcium deficiency symptoms (blossom end rot). When plants were grown in 5 L or 7.5 L of substrate volume, high irrigation frequency favored the vegetative growth, stomatal conductance, CO 2 assimilation and transpiration and fruit yield. Fruit yield and healthy fruits were favored by high irrigation frequency and did not depend on the substrate volume.
