Essential oils of Mentha pulegium and Mentha rotundifolia from Uruguay

Abstract: Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from leaves of Mentha pulegium L. and Mentha rotundifolia (L.) Huds. from Uruguay were analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Oxygen-containing monoterpenes were the main group of constituents in both oils. Pulegone, isomenthone and menthone were the major components in the oil of M. pulegium, whereas piperitenone oxide and (Z)-sabinene hydrate were the major ones in M. rotundifolia. Enantiomerically pure (-)-menthone, (+)-isomenthone, (+)-isomenthol, (-)-menthol and (+)-pul… Show more

“…Similarly, pennyroyal oils from different Algerian sites are characterized by the predominance of pulegone with different proportions 43.3 to 87.3% 36 . Similar results were obtained from Uruguay 7 and Tunisia 12 , the main compounds are respectively pulegone (73.4% and 61.11%) and isomenthone (12.9% and 17.02%). In Egypt, the pennyroyal oil is rich in pulegone (43.5%) and piperitone (12.2%) 9 .…”

“…The chemical composition of the pennyroyal oil has been described by several studies 4,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] . Pennyroyal oils are characterized by the preponderance of pulegone (70-90%) along with other monoterpenic ketones such as menthone, isomenthone and piperitenone 15 .…”

“…O mentol é um óleo essencial com propriedades anestésicas, antiespasmódicas, anti-inflamatórias, antiúlceras e antivirais, sendo de grande importância econômica na indústria farmacêutica (Lorenzo et al, 2002) e também na alimentícia e de cosméticos. O mentol é amplamente utilizado na anestesia de invertebrados marinhos (Ruppert e Barnes, 1996), mas não é um anestésico regulamentado para uso em peixes, e nem se conhece seu período de carência no tecido dos animais.…”

“…Several species of mentha have been investigated because of the essential oil produced by their leaves (Hiruma, 1993;Monte et al, 2001;Gobert et al, 2002;Lorenzo et al, 2002;Marchese et al, 2005;Sartoratto et al, 2004;Bertini et al, 2005;Bieski, 2005). The genus Mentha, family Labiatae, of the subfamily Nepetoidae and of the tribe Mentheae, is composed by approximately, 25 species.…”
