The effectiveness of menthol as anesthetic and sedative for fat snook (Centropomus parallelus) was tested at different salinities. In the first experiment, the fish were exposed to different concentrations of menthol (25, 37 and 50 mg L -1 ) in water at different salinities (0, 17 and 36 ppt). In the second experiment, the fish were transported for 10 hours in water with menthol at concentrations of 0, 3.7 and 7.4 mg L -1 under different salinities. Na + and K + ions from fish body and water were analyzed after transport. The optimal concentrations of menthol for a short handling period and surgical induction was 37 and 50 mg L -1 , respectively, and these values were independent of salinity. After transport, neither mortality nor significant changes in ammonia or dissolved oxygen were observed between treatments at the different salinities. The nitrite levels were lower in freshwater than in brackish and saltwater, but did not change with mentol. The total body levels of Na + increased with the salinity increase. Menthol is an effective anesthetic for handling of juvenile fat snook at different salinities. Menthol did not influence the measured water parameters and body ions, and it is not necessary for the transport of fat snook.Keywords: anesthesia, stress, fish, body ions, sedation.Salinidade não altera a eficácia de mentol como um anestésico e sedativo durante a manipulação e transporte de juvenis de robalo peva (Centropomus parallelus) ResumoA eficácia de mentol como anestésico e sedativo para o robalo peva (Centropomus parallelus) foi testada em diferentes salinidades. No primeiro experimento, os peixes foram expostos a diferentes concentrações de mentol (25, 37 e 50 mg L -1 ) em diferentes salinidades na água (0, 17 e 36 ppt). No segundo experimento, os peixes foram transportados por 10 horas em água com mentol nas concentrações de 0, 3,7 e 7,4 mg L -1 sob diferentes salinidades. O Na + e K + do corpo do peixe e a água foram analisados após o transporte. As concentrações ideais de mentol para um período curto de manipulação e indução cirúrgica foi 37 e 50 mg/L, respectivamente, sendo esses valores independentes da salinidade da água. Após o transporte, não foi verificado mortalidades e nem alterações significativas nos níveis da amônia e oxigênio dissolvido entre os tratamentos para as diferentes salinidades. Os níveis de nitrito foram mais baixos em água doce do que em água salobra e água salgada, mas não se alterou com o mentol. Os níveis corporais de Na + e K + aumentaram com o aumento da salinidade. Mentol é um eficaz anestésico para manipulação de robalo peva juvenil em diferentes salinidades. Mentol não influenciou os parâmetros de medição de água e íons do corpo, e não é necessário para o transporte de robalo peva.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar a eficiência do óleo de cravo como anestésico em adultos de tilápia-do-nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) e avaliar, sensorialmente, o aroma e o sabor do filé, após a anestesia. No primeiro experimento, os peixes foram expostos a banhos anestésicos em diferentes concentrações de óleo de cravo (0, 100, 150, 200, 250 e 350 mg L -1 ). No segundo experimento, avaliaram-se diferentes tempos (10, 20 e 30 minutos) de exposição à anestesia. Finalmente, o aroma e o sabor dos filés de tilápia foram testados, em diferentes tempos de exposição à concentração adequada de óleo de cravo. A concentração de 250 mg L -1 de óleo de cravo foi adequada para a indução de parada dos batimentos operculares em adultos de tilápia, e para a anestesia voltada para biometria e breve manejo, a concentração recomendada é 100 mg L -1 . Os filés de tilápias previamente anestesiadas com óleo de cravo apresentaram diferença moderada no aroma e no sabor logo após a anestesia. O óleo de cravo é um anestésico eficaz no manejo de adultos de tilápia em procedimentos de rotina na piscicultura, porém o abate de tilápias deve ser realizado a partir de 12 horas após a exposição a este anestésico, para não induzir alteração nas características organolépticas dos filés de peixes anestesiados.Termos para indexação: Oreochromis niloticus, análise sensorial, filés, sedação. Clove oil as an anesthetic on Nile tilapia adultsAbstract -The objective of this study was to test the efficiency of clove oil as an anesthetic for adult tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and to evaluate, sensorially, the aroma and taste of fillets after anesthesia. In the first experiment, fish were exposed to different clove oil concentrations (0, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 350 mg L -1 ) of anesthetic baths. In the second experiment, different times of exposure (10, 20 and 30 minutes) to anesthesia were evaluated. Finally, the aroma and taste of the tilapia fillets, when exposed to optimal concentration of clove oil, were tested. The concentration of 250 mg L -1 of clove oil was adequate to induce lower opercular movement in adult tilapia, and for anesthesia for biometrics and brief management, the recommended concentration is 100 mg L -1 . Fillets from tilapia anesthetized with clove oil showed a moderate difference in aroma and taste just after anesthesia. Thus, clove oil is an effective anesthetic for the management of adult tilapia as a routine procedure in fish farming, however tilapias should be slaughtered 12 hours after exposure to the drug, so as not to change the organoleptic characteristics of anesthetized fishes.

This study evaluated anesthetic efficacy and possible effects of the essential oils (EOs) of Cunila galioides (EOC) and Origanum majorana (EOO) on ventilatory rate (VR) and ionoregulation in Rhamdia quelen. In the anesthesia assessments, 50, 100, 200 and 300 μL L -1 EOC and 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μL L -1 EOO were tested, and time for induction to sedation and anesthesia stages, as well as recovery, were taken. A second trial employed lower concentrations of both EOs, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μL L . There was no significant difference between control and EO-treated groups regarding VR, but all fish subjected to 100 µL L -1 EOC died within 2 h of exposure. Overall, ionic loss declined in the presence of the EOs. The EOC at 200 -300 μL L -1 and EOO at 400 -500 μL L -1 present the potential to promote fast anesthesia in R. quelen.

The present study evaluated the hematological and biochemical parameters of adult tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under the influence of the physiological stress factor in animals submitted to air exposure during fattening in raceway system. Blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), leukogram, differencial leukocyte count, platelet, glucose, total protein, cholesterol, triglycerides and electrolytes (calcium, chloride, sodium and potassium) were analyzed. The results showed a uniform distribution for red blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, secondary Wintrobe indices, total protein, glucose, cholesterol, and serum ions, indicated by a relatively low variation coefficient. There was positive correlation only for total white blood cells, organic defense cells (neutrophils and lymphocytes), glucose, cholesterol, sodium and calcium. As for the leukocytes (WBC), as the animals were exposed to aeration, the number of leukocytes gradually decreased (leukopenia), simultaneously occurring neutrophilia and lymphopenia. The glycemic index was a good indicator of physiological stress due to hyperglycemia (82.0+20.88mg/dL) demonstrated in the treatments. The air exposure constituted an imbalance factor at the ion homeostasis and at the endogenous cholesterol synthesis. Besides, the recovery time did not result in the complete physiological rehabilitation face the imposed challenge.
