RESUMO: "Efeitos farmacológicos do monoterpeno α,β-epoxi-carvona em camundongos". O monoterpeno α,β-epóxi-carvona (EC) nas doses de 200, 300 e 400 mg/kg administrado por via i.p. em camundongos diminuiu signifi cativamente a atividade motora dos animais, quando comparado aos controles, até 120 minutos após a administração. As doses de 300 e 400 mg/kg induziram um aumento signifi cativo do tempo de sono dos animais não alterando, no entanto, a sua latência. O EC na dose de 400 mg/kg induziu uma redução no tempo de permanência dos animais na barra giratória (teste do rotarod). Os resultados sugerem um possível efeito central.Unitermos: Efeito farmacológico, óleo essencial, monoterpeno, α,β-epóxi-carvona, camundongos. ABSTRACT:The monoterpene α,β-epoxy-carvone (EC) in doses of 200, 300 or 400 mg/kg injected by i.p. route in mice caused a signifi cant decrease in the motor activity of animals when compared with the control group, up to 120 minutes after the administration. The doses of 300 or 400 mg/kg had induced a signifi cant increase of in the sleeping time of animals not having modifi ed, however, the latency. The EC in the dose of 400 mg/kg reduced the remaining time of the animals on the rotating rod (Rotarod test). These results suggest a possible central effect.

RESUMO:A realização de estudos farmacológicos é fundamental para comprovar a eficácia do uso de plantas medicinais pela população para o tratamento de doenças e descobrir novos fitoterápicos. Palavras-chave: Maytenus rigida, bom nome, Celastraceae, atividade antibacteriana, plantas medicinais ABSTRACT: Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of Maytenus rigida Mart. (Celastraceae).Ppharmacological studies are essential to prove the effectiveness of using medicinal plants to treat diseases and discover new phytotherapics. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial potential of ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts of "bom-nome" (Maytenus rigida Mart.) against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, three samples of multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from patients with nosocomial infections, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and Salmonella sp. (228-R-Tet, 118-R-Sut and 01-S) isolated from water environment, using the agar diffusion test. Both extracts showed in vitro antimicrobial activity against all S. aureus strains, presenting 400 mg mL -1 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). However, these products did not show activity against strains of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella sp.

Introduction: Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworms of the genus Schistosoma, affects more than 200 million people worldwide, and its control is dependent on a single drug, praziquantel. Here, we report the in vitro effect of rotundifolone, a monoterpene isolated from Mentha x villosa (Lamiaceae), on Schistosoma mansoni adult worms. Methods: The in vitro effect of rotundifolone on adult Schistosoma mansoni was evaluated by analysis of behavior and mortality and through a scanning electron microscopic analysis of ultrastructural changes in the tegument of the worms. Results: At concentrations of 3.54 and 7.09μg/mL -1 rotundifolone, no worm mortality was observed at any of the sampling intervals. A minor reduction in movement of the tail, suckers, and gynecophoral canal membrane was observed after 96 h of exposure to 7.09μg/mL -1 rotundifolone. At 70.96μg/mL -1 , a lack of movement was observed from 72h onwards and all worms were deemed dead; similar effects were observed at 48h with 177.4μg/mL -1 , and at 24h with 354.8μg/mL -1 and 700.96μg/mL -1 . Rotundifolone also caused death of all parasites and separation of coupled pairs into individual males and females after 24h at 354.8μg/mL -1 . Conclusions: The main changes in the tegument induced by the different ROT treatments were: after 24h incubation, bubble lesions spread over the entire body and loss of tubercles occurred in some regions of the ventral region.
