Use of conditioners in the production of Tifton 85 grass hay

Abstract: -The objectives of this study were to estimate the curve of dehydration, bromatological composition and occurrence of fungi in Tifton 85 grass, submitted to four methods of dehydration. The curves of dehydration were studied in a completely randomized design with a 4 × 11 factorial scheme with four drying systems (1 conditioning + 1 turn-over; 2 conditionings + 1 turn-over; no conditioning + 1 turn-over and no conditioning + 2 turn-overs) and 11 sampling times (0, 3, 15, 18, 21, 24, 39, 42, 45 and 47 hours af… Show more

“…The NDIP of the first and second crop was higher at harvest and baling, respectively ( Table 2), results that were in agreement with those reported by Castagnara et al (2011). Pasqualotto et al (2015) showed that NDIP is reduced with time when hay production occurs under high conditioning intensity, whereas no change was observed when hay production occurs under low conditioning intensity.…”

“…In the class of green bulky, the pastures of Tifton 85 stood out at 61.02% of the properties in the summer and 38.81% of the properties in the winter. Tifton 85 is a forage grass that is traditionally used in western Paraná, both for grazing and for hay production (CASTAGNARA et al, 2011).…”

Tifton 85 is a forage grass that is traditionally used in western Paraná, both for grazing and for hay production (CASTAGNARA et al, 2011). It is worth noting that some properties adopted new forage technologies for animals in order to provide new forage species that are distinct from those that are traditionally used, such as the Aries grass (Panicum maximum cv.…”

“…Low levels of fraction A at 30 days of storage can be attributed to the high levels of dry matter recorded in hays (mean of 876.62 kg ha -1 ), an indication of the occurrence of less proteolysis during storage. The main alteration in the chemical composition of hay occurs in the first 30 days of storage, which may have affected the A fraction (CASTAGNARA et al, 2011).…”

“…Milk production in western Parana is based on the use of tropical grasses in pastures or conserved in the form of silage or hay. The use of forage preserved in the form of hay is a very common practice used by farmers as an alternative to solve the problem of the seasonality of fodder, and to allow the best use of the surplus; however, the storage of forage for long periods of time may cause changes in nutritional value (CASTAGNARA et al, 2011) Tifton 85 bermudagrass hay stored up to 90 days in a covered shed. The cutting height of the forage for haying can influence the nutritional value of the forage by affecting dry matter production, since cutting heights closer to the ground increase mass production, but these also include senescent parts that contribute to reduced nutritional value of the hay.…”
