-This study was developed to evaluate the effects of adding L-glutamine and L-glutamate in diets with no lactose or with 4.0 or 8.0% lactose inclusion for piglets weaned at 21 days old. One hundred and eight piglets with initial weight of 6.12±0.70 kg were allotted in a complete randomized block design, in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement, with six treatments, six replicates, and three piglets per experimental unit. The experimental diets were supplied from 21 to 35 days. From 36 to 49 days, animals received the same diet with no lactose inclusion, but the animals in the treatments with L-glutamine + L-glutamate in the previous phase continued to receive diets containing these ingredients. There was no interaction between the level of lactose and the inclusion of L-glutamine + L-glutamate on the parameters evaluated. The levels of lactose did not affect the performance of piglets in either of the two periods. Adding L-glutamine and L-glutamate in the diet positively influenced the weight gain of pigs from 21 to 49 days of age and increased the villous height in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Inclusion of L-glutamine + L-glutamate in diets for piglets weaned at 21 days of age improves the performance and the intestinal mucosa morphology, regardless of lactose addition.

RESUMO -Para avaliar os efeitos da suplementação dietética de maltodextrina em substituição parcial à lactose e de acidificante sobre o desempenho, a digestibilidade e a viabilidade econômica em leitões desmamados, foram utilizados 144 leitões Dalland com pesos iniciais de 6,0 ± 0,45 kg no ensaio 1, no qual foram utilizadas rações mais complexas, e de 5,8 ± 0,53 kg no ensaio 2. Os delineamentos experimentais foram em blocos ao acaso, com arranjo fatorial 2 × 2 dos tratamentos (ausência ou presença de maltodextrina × ausência ou presença de acidificante). Não houve interação maltodextrina × acidificante e efeito do acidificante sobre o desempenho dos leitões em ambos os ensaios. A maltodextrina determinou maior consumo diário de ração e ganho diário de peso de 0 a 14 dias no ensaio 1, mas não influenciou o desempenho na fase de 0 a 28 dias e nos períodos de 0 a 16 e de 0 a 30 dias do ensaio 2. Não houve interação maltodextrina × acidificante nem efeitos desses fatores sobre os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes das rações pré-iniciais do ensaio 2. As rações com maltodextrina e maltodextrina + acidificante proporcionaram melhor resultado econômico. A maltodextrina e o acidificante não influenciaram o valor nutricional das rações. Diets containing maltodextrin and maltodextrin + acidifier mix provided best economical results. Neither maltodextrin nor acidifiers affected the nutritional value of the diets. Use of maltodextrin and a prebiotic in the feed of weaned piglets

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of replacing lactose with maltodextrin and adding fructooligosaccharides (FOSs) to the feed of weaned piglets. The first experiment was conducted using a randomized block design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (2 sources of carbohydrates: maltodextrin and lactose in the pre-starter feed and with or without the use of 0.3% FOS in the prestarter and starter feeds) with 7 repetitions in 3 animals. Performance and hematological parameters were evaluated. The second experiment was conducted using a randomized block design with a 2 × 2 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement (2 sources of carbohydrates: maltodextrin and lactose and with or without the use of 0.3% FOS; 2 slaughter dates: 7 and 14 d post-weaning; and slaughter on the day of weaning) with 8 repetitions in 1 animal. The following parameters were evaluated: pH and relative weight of digestive organs, enzyme activity, and microbial population. In the initial phase, maltodextrin did not compromise performance and could replace lactose with economic benefits; however, it does reduce intake of the pre-starter I feed. Maltodextrin has a prebiotic effect because it reduces the total coliform and E. coli populations in the cecum and reduces the pH of the rectal contents. The use of FOSs is not justified, regardless of whether lactose or maltodextrin is added to the feed. Foram avaliados o desempenho e parâmetros hematológicos. No segundo experimento foi empregado o delineamento de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 2 x 2 x 2 + 1 (duas fontes de carboidratos: maltodextrina e lactose; com ou sem uso de 0,3% de frutoligossacarídeo; duas épocas de abate: sete e quatorze dias pós-desmame; e abate no dia do desmame) com oito repetições de um animal. Foram avaliados o pH e peso relativo de órgãos do sistema digestório, atividade enzimática e população microbiana. Na fase inicial a maltodextrina não compromete o desempenho e pode substituir com vantagem econômica a lactose, contudo, reduz a ingestão da ração pré-inicial I. A maltodextrina possui efeito prebiótico, pois reduz a população de coliformes totais e de E. coli no ceco e o pH do conteúdo do reto. O uso de frutoligossacarídeo não se justifica independente de se usar lactose ou maltodextrina nas rações.
