Objective: Correlate functional capacity in elderly people with the severity of the trauma and compare it before and after the trauma. Methods: Prospective observational study conducted in an emergency department, comprised of 55 elderly people, age 60 and over, of both sexes, who suffered trauma. The incapacity of patients with functional limitations of various origins was assessed. The research instruments applied at three different times were: the Functional Independence Measure and the Injury Severity Score to assess the severity of the trauma. Results: Functional capacity within 48 hours of the trauma was significantly higher than functional capacity at discharge and after one month. The lower the severity of the trauma was the greater the functional capacity of the aged. Conclusion: The functional capacity of the elderly deteriorated during the time of hospital stay and one month after discharge. ResumoObjetivo: Correlacionar a capacidade funcional do idoso com a gravidade do trauma e compará-la nos momentos antes e após a ocorrência do trauma. Métodos: Estudo prospectivo e observacional realizado no Serviço de Emergência. Foram incluídos 55 idosos com idade a partir de 60 anos, ambos os sexos, vítimas de trauma. Foram avaliados a incapacidade de pacientes com restrições funcionais de origem variada. Os instrumentos de pesquisa aplicados em três momentos foram: a Medida de Independência Funcional e o Injury Severity Score para avaliar a gravidade do trauma. Resultados: A capacidade funcional em até 48 horas foi significativamente maior que a capacidade funcional na alta e após um mês. Quanto menor a gravidade do trauma maior a capacidade funcional do idoso. Conclusão: Os idosos apresentaram piora da capacidade funcional durante o período de internação e após um mês de na alta hospitalar.

Objective:To describe the scientific knowledge produced about trauma in the elderly caused by traffic accidents in healthcare area studies. Methods: Integrative review of studies from 2003 to 2013 searched in LILACS, SciELO, PubMed and CINHAL databases. We used combination of the descriptors injuries, wounds and accidents, in English, Portuguese and Spanish languages. Results: 32 studies were selected. In the thematic analysis, three categories emerged: epidemiological data from traffic accidents involving elderly; traffic accidents with elderly pedestrians; and trauma care in the elderly. We observed increased incidence of trauma in most countries and pedestrians represented a large part of the victims. Among these, the elderly are the most vulnerable group. Conclusion: Studies showed that trauma care in the elderly need protocols and professionals with training in gerontology specialized in trauma care services.

Os maus-tratos contra idosos aumentam vertiginosamente, provocando impacto na saúde física e psíquica dos longevos. Buscou-se investigar a produção científica nacional da área da saúde entre os anos de 2003 e 2010 sobre a violência contra idosos. A análise de dados seguiu a metodologia proposta por Gil (1999), composta por quatro etapas: leitura exploratória, seletiva, analítica e interpretativa. Os resultados apontaram que as estatísticas de violência são pouco precisas e os principais perpetradores dos maus-tratos são os familiares. Há necessidade de maior capacitação para os profissionais que atuam nas políticas públicas de atendimento ao idoso, visando à identificação e tratamento. Enfatiza-se a necessidade de criação de programas de prevenção à violência contra idosos e destaca-se a necessidade de novas pesquisas sobre o tema, cabendo conscientizar a sociedade e os profissionais da área da saúde sobre a importância deste tema.
