Investigation into the role of NaOH and calcium ions in the synthesis of calcium phosphate nanoshells

Abstract: -Calcium phosphate (CaP) nanoshells were prepared using negatively charged liposomes (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate sodium salt (DOPA)) as a template by base titration synthesis at various concentrations of NaOH and calcium ions. The elemental composition, morphology, particle size, particle size distribution and zeta potential of the products were determined via various characterisation techniques, such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light … Show more

“…As mentioned above, lower network connectivity in B‐modified BGs results in decreased chemical durability and increased rate of ions release profile (Tainio et al, ). It has been shown that elevated concentrations of Ca 2+ ions lead to higher final Ca/P ratios (Yeo, Zein, Ahmad, & McPhail, ). According to back scattering SEM coupled with EDX after 14 days of incubation in SBF, higher amount of deposition in 7B‐BG containing bilayered membranes was confirmed.…”

“…As mentioned above, lower network connectivity in Bmodified BGs results in decreased chemical durability and increased rate of ions release profile (Tainio et al, 2017). It has been shown that elevated concentrations of Ca 2+ ions lead to higher final Ca/P ratios (Yeo, Zein, Ahmad, & McPhail, 2012 (Li et al, 2015). In literature, it was also shown that the amount of BG to be added affects the mechanical properties of GBR membranes and needs to be optimized (Fu et al, 2017;Rodrigues et al, 2016).…”

“…and phosphate precursors such as H 3 PO 4 and (NH 4 )H 2 PO 4 during the fabrication process. [6][7][8] The raw materials for producing hydroxyapatite can also be obtained from natural sources. Some previous studies examined hydroxyapatite manufacturing using natural calcium sources such as clamshell 9 and eggshell, 10 but their availability is limited.…”

“…Moreover, elemental analysis executed by EDX indicated the weight percentage of the elements and allowed the calculation of the final Ca/P ratio, which was shown in Table . The molar ratio was calculated via Equation (1) (Yeo, Zein, Ahmad, & McPhail, ): lefttrueFinal molar ratio ofCa/P=mole fraction ofcamole fraction ofP=weight%ofCa/molecular weight ofCaweight%ofP/molecular weight ofP where, molecular weight for Ca = 40.08 Da, P = 30.97 Da.…”
