Sex workers have been the protagonists and focus of HIV prevention campaigns and research since the late 1980s in Brazil. Through a review of national and international literature, combined with a history of sex workers' involvement in the construction of the Brazilian response, this article explores the overlaps and disconnects between research and practice in contexts of prostitution over the past three decades. We review the scientific literature on the epidemiology of HIV among sex workers and prevention methodologies. We conclude that although research focus and designs often reinforce the idea that sex workers' vulnerability is due to their sexual relationships with clients, their greatest vulnerability has been found to be with their nonpaying intimate partners. Few studies explore their work contexts and structural factors that influence safe sex practices with both types of partners. The negative effects of criminalization, stigma, and exclusively biomedical and peer education-based approaches are well documented in the scientific literature and experiences of sex worker activists, as is the importance of prevention programs that combine empowerment and human rightsbased approach to reduce HIV infection rates. We conclude that there is a need for actions, policies, and research that encompass the environment and context of sex workers' lives and reincorporate the human rights and citizenship frame that dominated the Brazilian response until the end of the 2000s. As part of HIV prevention efforts, female sex workers need to be considered above all as women, equal to all others.

“…Quanto ao tempo de exercício do meretrício, metade da amostra estudada tinha acima de 2 anos de exercício da prostituição, com relato de até 34 anos, o que mostra ser difícil sair do meretrício, principalmente devido às baixas condições socioeconômicas. Estudo realizado em Fortaleza (CE), com 81 prostitutas, revelou que 35 (43,2%) mulheres estavam em atuação por um período de um a cinco anos, enquanto as demais, entre seis até mais de 30 anos, configurando uma longa permanência na prostituição (16) . A partir da análise dos dados sobre a violência vivenciada pelas prostitutas, pode-se observar que quase metade das mulheres entrevistadas, 31 (40,8%), afirmou ter sido vítima de algum tipo de agressão nos mais diversos ambientes.…”

ReSUmO Trata-se de um estudo descritivo-exploratório, com abordagem quantitativa, que teve por objetivo caracterizar a violência física sofrida por prostitutas piauienses e identificar a prevalência deste agravo. Participaram do estudo 76 prostitutas cadastradas na Associação das Profissionais do Sexo de Picos, município do estado do Piauí. A coleta de dados foi realizada nas zonas de prostituição e na Associação, no período de setembro a outubro de 2010. Os resultados evidenciaram que a maioria das prostitutas era jovem, de baixa renda, baixa escolaridade, apresentava tempo de prostituição superior há dois anos (50%), sendo acometidas principalmente pela violência psicológica (60,5%), seguida da física (30,2%). Os agressores eram conhecidos das vítimas e as mulheres dificilmente realizaram a denúncia. Os resultados foram esclarecedores e levaram a afirmar que é comum a ocorrência de violência em mulheres prostitutas, já que estas trabalham em lugares determinantes de atos violentos. descritores: Prostituição; Violência Contra a Mulher; Enfermagem. aBStRaCt This is a descriptive exploratory study with a quantitative approach, which aimed to characterize the physical violence suffered by prostitutes of Piauí and identify the prevalence of this disease. The study included 76 prostitutes registered in the Association of Sex Professionals of Picos, county of the state of Piauí, Brazil. The data collection was conducted in the areas of prostitution and in the association, from September to October 2010. The results showed that most prostitutes were young, with low income, low education, had more than two years in prostitution (50%), being mainly affected by psychological violence (60.5%) followed by physical (30.2%). The aggressors were known to the victims and women hardly made the complaint. The results were enlightening and led to affirm that it is common the occurrence of violence in women prostitutes, because they work in places determinants of violent acts. Los atacantes eran conocidos de las víctimas y las mujeres rara vez presentan la queja. Los resultados fueron esclarecedores y llevaron a afirmar que la ocurrencia de la violencia en las mujeres prostitutas es común, ya que trabajan en lugares determinantes de los hechos violentos.

Changes in the profile of sexually transmitted diseases have increased the need for their detection, particularly where there is a concentration of individuals with risk behavior, so that diagnosis and immediate treatment can be translated in the reduction of resulting problems. The objective was to identify the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in female sex workers in a medium-sized city in São Paulo state. This population prevalence study was conducted in 2008 on 102 females. The prevalence was 71.6%. When considered separately and in association, the highest values found were: HPV (67.7%) and Chlamydia (20.5%). HPV typing showed oncogenic genotypes. The prevalence of syphilis was 4.0% and of trichomoniasis 3.0%. No cases of hepatitis B or gonorrhea were identified. It was concluded that the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in the studied group was high, since approximately two thirds of the women showed some type of disease under this classification. Considerados aisladamente y en asociación, los mayores valores encontrados fueron: VPH (67,7%) e infección clamidiana (20,5%). El tipaje del VPH evidenció genotipos oncogénicos. La prevalencia de sífilis fue de 4,0% y de tricomoníasis 3,0%. Ningún caso de hepatitis B o gonorrea fue identificado. Se concluye que la prevalencia de enfermedad sexualmente transmisible fue elevada, ya que aproximadamente dos tercios de las mujeres presentaban alguna enfermedad de ese tipo.
