Objectives: The aim of the present qualitative and quantitative study was to investigate whether the participation of elderly persons in the University of the Third Age (U3A) of the Federal University of São Paulo, Baixada Santista (Unifesp/BS) led to a perceived improvement in quality of life; the meaning of the term quality of life for the participants; and whether education and social interaction are considered relevant in any such perceived improvement. Method: Data were collected through the SF-36 questionnaire and semi-structured interviews at the beginning and end of the academic year. Results: The quantitative data did not differ significantly between the beginning and end of the research period, except for the variable Vitality (V). The qualitative results, however, signaled a perception of change in terms of education, social interaction and quality of life. Conclusion: The data indicated that participation in the University of the Third Age at the Federal University of São Paulo, Baixada Santista (Unifesp/BS) was associated with a perception of positive changes in the quality of life of the elderly persons, who considered social interaction and education to be an important part of these improvements.

“…Em um estudo realizado com 495 idosos na cidade de Alfenas/MG, também os idosos avaliados demonstraram estar satisfeitos e bastante satisfeitos com a qualidade de vida geral 29 . Dawalibi et al 30 avaliou 182 idosos participantes de três Universidades Abertas para a Terceira Idade e o escore da percepção da qualidade de vida geral dos idosos foram altos, resultados semelhantes aos encontrados neste estudo. Em contrapartida Nunes et al 31 avaliando a qualidade de vida de idosos institucionalizados através do questionário WHOQOL-OLD, verificou que o escore médio de 52,9%, correspondeu a uma percepção nem satisfatório e nem insatisfatório da qualidade de vida.…”

RESUMOO objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a aptidão funcional e a qualidade de vida de idosos participantes de uma Universidade Aberta da Maior Idade. A amostra foi composta de 189 idosas e 50 homens idosos, divididos em três faixas etárias (60 a 64 anos, 65 a 69 anos e 70 anos ou mais). A aptidão funcional foi avaliada através do Sênior Fitness Test e a qualidade de vida através do questionário WHOQOL-OLD. Para as comparações entre as diferentes faixas etárias e gênero intra e entre os grupos, foi utilizado a análise de variância (ANOVA) seguido pelo teste de post hoc de Turkey, com nível significância de p<0,05. Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferença no IMC entre os gêneros da UAMI nas diferentes faixas etárias (p>0,05). Os homens idosos acima dos 65 anos tinham sobrepeso e obesidade e nas idosas somente entre 60 a 64 anos. Na aptidão funcional, os idosos da UAMI não apresentaram diferença entre as faixas etárias e gênero na maioria dos testes (p>0,05). Valores abaixo da média na maioria dos testes da aptidão funcional foram mostrados nos idosos da UAMI comparado aos idosos americanos nas diferentes faixas etárias e gênero. O escore de 66,16% mostrou que a amostra de idosos estavam satisfeitos com a qualidade de vida geral. Em conclusão, a aptidão funcional dos idosos da UAMI está abaixo da média e estão satisfeitos com a qualidade de vida geral. Palavras-chave: Idosos. Aptidão funcional. Qualidade de vida. Universidades. ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the physical fitness and quality of life of elderly attending a University of the Third Age (UTA). The sample was composed of 189 elderly women and 50 elderly men, divided into three age ranges (60 to 64 years, 65-69 years and 70 or older). Physical fitness was evaluated by Senior Fitness Test and quality of life by WHOQOL-OLD questionnaire. For intragroup and intergroup comparisons between different age ranges and gender was used analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey post hoc test for multiple comparisons, with significance level of p<0.05. Results showed that there was no difference in BMI between gender in different age ranges of elderly from UTA (p>0.05). Nevertheless, elderly men of 65 years or more were with overweight and obesity, and elderly women only between 60 to 64 years. In the physical fitness, elderly man did not showed differences between age ranges and gender in most test (p>0.05).Were presented values below average in most physical fitness tests of elderly from UTA compare to American elderly in different age ranges and gender. The score of 66.16% showed that the samples of elderly were satisfied with the overall quality of life. In conclusion, physical fitness of elderly that attending a University of the Third Age are below average and the elderly are satisfied with the quality of life. Keywords: Elderly. Physical fitness. Introduction The process of aging could lead to seniors being more prone to falls, which affects their quality of life.Objective The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between quality of life and gait in the elderly.Methods We used World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief (WHOQOL-Brief) Brazilian version and the Dynamic Gait Index to assess fifty-six volunteers from the northeast of Brazil. Ages ranged from 60 to 85 years.Results The Dynamic Gait Index, which indicates the probability of falls, resulted in 36.3% of the sample presenting abnormal results. There was correlation between domain 2 (psychological) and domain 4 (environment) with domain 1(Physical) and domain 3 (Social); a negative correlation between age and Domain 2; correlation between Question 1 (How would you rate your quality of life?) and domains 1, 2, and 4 and no correlation between questions 1 and 2 (How satisfied are you with your health?). Question 2 was correlated with all of the domains. There was negative association between question 1 and falls, and a slight correlation between the Dynamic Gait Index scores and Question 1.Conclusion The self-perception of the study group about their quality of life was either good or very good, even though a considerable percentage of individuals had suffered falls or reported gait disturbances.
