Milk quality according to the daily range in farm production in the Mesoregion Central Mineira and Oeste of Minas Gerais regions, Brazil

Abstract: The objective of this work was to characterize milk production from the Central Mineira and Oeste Mesoregions regions in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, according to quality parameters such as somatic cell count, total bacteria count, and composition for specific production ranges. Average results for milk fat, protein, total and nonfat solids were compliant with Brazilian legal requirements (IN-62/2011) in all the production ranges selected. Average somatic cell counts (SCC) complied with the legal requirements o… Show more

“…It is typical from this region utilize crossbred animals. None of the herds in this analysis is composed of pure breed and the most used are Holstein and Gyr crossbreds (BORGES et al, 2013); however, the greater proportion of Holstein degree blood animals is observed for high production farms.…”

“…individual, breed, herd, region, year, month, SCC, lactation period, age, and milking period ). Despite the current common knowledge on the variation of SCC, TBC, fat and protein across the year and milk production, only a few studies have studied deeply these issues, even acknowledging its importance (GONÇALVES et al, 2014;BORGES et al, 2013). Thus, our objectives were to divide rural properties according to daily milk production, and to evaluate milk quality within each production scale throughout the seasons.…”

“…Recent studies have studied some milk quality traits (milk composition and hygienic-sanitary aspects -SCC and TBC) and its association with different production scales (Borges et al, 2013;Bodenmüller et al, 2010), while others have studied technical and management efficiency of dairy farmers and its association with different scales of production (Fassio et al, 2005;Gonçalves et al, 2008;Lopes et al, 2008). However, there are no studies associating both milk quality traits and financial management of dairy farms within different scales of production.…”
