O capim-sudão, (Sorghum sudanense) vem ganhando destaque por apresentar maior flexibilidade de épocas de plantio, principalmente em épocas de escassez de alimento. O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar a qualidade fisiológica de lotes comerciais de sementes de Sorghum sudanense na região do médio alto Uruguai -Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Foram realizados testes de germinação (G) primeira contagem (PC), teste de frio (TF), envelhecimento acelerado (EA), teste de tetrazólio (TZ), massa seca (MS) e massa verde de plântulas (MV), comprimento de parte aérea (CPA) e raiz (CR), sementes mortas (SM), sementes duras (SD) plântulas anormais (AN) e sanidade das sementes. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância, e as médias comparadas entre si pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. Os testes PC, EA, SM e TZ foram os que melhor estratificaram os lotes. Já os demais testes não foram eficientes para identificar a qualidade fisiológica dos lotes. Os testes realizados mostraram claramente a baixa qualidade fisiológica das sementes nos lotes avaliados, demonstrando que estes não estão seguindo os padrões exigidos pela legislação vigente.Palavras-chave: germinação, estabelecimento, potencial produtivo. Evaluation of the physiological quality of different commercial lots of seeds of Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense).The Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense) has been gaining prominence due to the greater flexibility of planting times, especially in times of food scarcity. The objective of this work was to verify the physiological quality of commercial seed lots of Sorghum sudanense in the region of the upper middle Uruguay -Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The germination tests (G) were first counted (PC), cold test (TF), accelerated aging (EA), tetrazolium test (TZ), dry mass (DM) and green seedling mass (CPA) and root (CR), dead seeds (SM), hard seeds (SD), abnormal seedlings (AN) and seed health. The results were submitted to analysis of variance, and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% of probability. The PC, EA, SM and TZ tests were the ones that best stratified the batches. The other tests were not efficient to identify the physiological quality of the lots. The tests performed clearly showed the low physiological quality of the seeds in the evaluated lots, demonstrating that they are not following the standards required by the current legislation.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the morphometry, viability and germination of B. hispida seeds, at the Universidad de Córdoba, Colombia. Eight biometric characteristics were measured in a sample of seeds taken at random from a balanced compound originating from 50 fruits. The external and internal morphological description was made on a sample of 10 seeds. Seed viability was estimated by the tetrazolium test, using the combination of two staining times (2 and 3 hours) and three concentrations of (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%), under a design completely randomized, with six treatments and four repetitions of 50 seeds. The germination test (PRUGER) was performed in a mesh house with four repetitions of 50 seeds to estimate eight physiological parameters of germination. The morpho-metric characteristics of thickness, length and width of seeds showed reduced phenotypic variation, compared with the weight, density and volume of a seed, with variation coefficients greater than 11.7%. The seed, ovoid and flattened, presents an embryo with its cotyledons wrapped in a protective membrane. The viability, determined with tetrazolium, was 89.5-96.5%, while the PRUGER was 100%, with no statistical differences between them (P≥0.05). The combination of 0.5% tetrazolium with 2 hours is sufficient to determine the viability of the seed. Germination elapsed from 6 to 19 days after sowing, with a germination speed index of 0.22, average daily germination of 5.26%, peak value of 5.33 and germination value of 28.

Passiflora foetida L. has broad utility as a medicinal and ornamental plant; however, information regarding varieties and the physiological potential of their seeds are scarce. Here, we aim to evaluate in vitro and ex vitro germination behaviour and to adapt tetrazolium methodology for P. foetida var. glaziovii Killip. The botanical identification and characterisation were performed through the observation of morphological characters and consultation of the relevant literature. Ex vitro germination was performed on rolled and flat Germitest paper at continuous (25 °C) and alternating (20 and 30 °C; night and day, respectively) temperatures. Seeds with the completely removed integument were used for in vitro germination and tetrazolium tests. The in vitro germination test was performed with MS medium using seeds conditioned under different light qualities (white, red, far-red or darkness) and at two temperature regimes (25 °C; 20 and 30 °C alternating temperature). For the tetrazolium test, seeds were soaked in different concentrations of tetrazolium salt (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 or 10 g L -1 ) at different temperatures (30, 35, 40 or 45 °C) for two hours in the dark. This is the first record of P. foetida var. glaziovii, a wild herbaceous vine with glandular trichomes on its leaves, bracts and stipules; fruit bacoid, elliptic, glabrous, in Espírito Santo State, Brazil. The seeds are small (approximately 4.87 mm long and 2.15 mm wide) and non-photoblastic, and in vitro germination must be performed using an alternating temperature (20 and 30 °C) regime. The best result of germination was achieved using a concentration-temperature combination of 10 g L -1 tetrazolium and 30 °C.
