Abstract:Acacia is an important forest species of rapid growth whose seeds have tegument dormancy. In this work it was intended to characterize water absorption pattern after seed dormancy break, and to determine the amount of water, container size and the need of breaking the tegument dormancy, as to perform electrical conductivity test in small and large seeds of Acacia mangium (Fabaceae). The seeds were collected from 10, 8 and 6 years old trees established in poor yielding-capacity soils on savannah areas of Roraima, Brazil; seeds were classified in six lots concerning to seed size and tree age. Germination tests (50 seeds and four replications per lot) were carried out on germitest® paper maintained on gerbox at 25 °C. Imbibition was verified by seed weighing at different times (0, 2, 5, 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96 and 120 hours). The electrical conductivity test consisted of three experiments, distinguished by the amount of water used and by the container size in which seeds were immersed. Seeds of A. mangium coming from 10 years old trees presented increased germination percent and germination speed than seeds of six-year old trees. Small seeds presented increased in electrical conductivity and water absorption until 120 hours when compared to large seeds. The immersion of seeds of A. mangium in 40 mL of distilled water into 180 mL plastic containers, after dormancy break, it is indicated for the determination of electrical conductivity test. The ratio of electrolytes by seed mass, after 24 hours of immersion in water, turns electrical conductivity test more accurate concerning A. mangium seeds. Rev. Biol. Trop. 64 (4): 1651-1660. -Queen palm is a tropical species of ecological importance and economic potential in various uses, including food. however, the knowledge about the nutritional value of fruits and the estimation of seed viability are still scarce. the aims of this work were to study the biometrics and chemical composition of fruits and seeds; describe the anatomy of embryos and assess the viability of the tetrazolium test. Mature fruits were collected, processed and submitted to biometry, water content, pulp and seeds chemical composition, germination and emergence in the laboratory evaluations. For the tetrazolium test, whole embryos were immersed in solution at 40 °c for one, two, four and six hours and compared with germination. the fruit pulp is rich in carbohydrates. the tetrazolium test performed at 40 ° c and 0.2% solution for two hours is adequate to estimate seed viability. GLASSMANRESUMO -O coqueiro-jerivá é uma espécie tropical de importância ecológica e potencial econômico em diversos usos, inclusive alimentício. contudo, o conhecimento sobre o valor nutricional dos frutos e a estimativa da viabilidade de sementes ainda são escassos na literatura. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram estudar a biometria e a composição centesimal de frutos e sementes; descrever a anatomia dos embriões, e avaliar o uso do teste de tetrazólio. Frutos maduros e recém-colhidos foram processados e submetidos à avaliação de dados biométricos, teor de água e composição química da polpa e das sementes, avaliação da germinação e emergência de plântulas em laboratório. Para o tetrazólio, embriões inteiros foram imersos na solução, a 40 °c, por uma, duas, quatro e seis horas, e comparados com teste de germinação e da emergência. A polpa dos frutos é rica em carboidratos.O teste de tetrazólio conduzido a 40°c, em solução de concentração a 0,2%, durante duas horas, é adequado para estimar a viabilidade das sementes. RESUMO -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento inicial de mudas de Acacia mangium semeadas em "manta" de fibra de coco contendo substrato de lodo de esgoto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com 13 tratamentos e três repetições, distribuídos em esquema fatorial (6 x 2 + 1) com seis proporções de fibra de coco e resíduo agregante, combinados com substratos com e sem lodo de esgoto, mais o tratamentocontrole (terra de subsolo). Foram avaliados o índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE), a percentagem de emergência (EM) e a altura das plantas aos 40 e 60 dias após a emergência. O tratamento-controle apresentou melhores resultados em relação ao IVE e EM quando comparado com os tratamentos utilizando "manta" de fibra de coco e resíduo agregante. Não houve diferença entre o controle e os tratamentos com "mantas" em altura das plantas aos 40 e 60 dias. Não foram observadas interações entre o tipo de substrato utilizado no semeio e as diferentes proporções de fibra de coco na "manta". A presença de lodo no substrato não influenciou o IVE e a EM, contudo verificou-se que o substrato sem lodo de esgoto proporcionou maior crescimento em altura das plantas. O uso de "mantas" contendo 50 e 100% de fibra de coco proporcionou maior crescimento às mudas de acácia em condições de campo.
