Removal of organic matter and nutrients from slaughterhouse wastewater by using Eichhornia crassipes and evaluation of the generated biomass composting

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes applied in situ in a slaughter house treatment system, located in the west of the Paraná state, Brazil, regarding the nutrients removal and organic matter. Moreover, it aimed to obtain data from the production, management and composting practices of the biomass generated in the system. During 11 months of macrophytes development, physic and chemical parameters were monitored and plant density … Show more

“…High nutritional content and organic matter, coming from production process, characterize the wastewater from slaughterhouse; therefore, prior treatment is necessary before its final destination (Mees et al, 2009;Tocchi et al, 2013). According to Cabral et al (2011), the disposal of wastewater in the soil, as an alternative of final destination, in addition to water source, promotes the nutritional increment for the development of cultivars, reducing production costs.…”

“…Besides consuming large volumes of water (between 8 and 20 liters of water per slaughtered poultry), the slaughterhouse and poultry cold storage processing plant are responsible for the deterioration of the main water sources, which justifies this study on the rational use of this natural resource (MATSUMURA, MIERZWA, 2008;AVULA et al, 2009;FARIA et al, 2009;KIST et al, 2009;MEES et al, 2009;DE NARDI et al, 2011).…”

“…Nesta categoria matadouros e indústrias de processamento de carne são conhecidos pelo alto potencial poluidor (Mees et al, 2009). O efluente dos matadouros possui uma elevada vazão e grande carga de sólidos em suspensão, nitrogênio orgânico, além de uma demanda bioquímica de oxigênio -DBO de 4.200 mg L -1 em média (Aguilar et al, 2002) dependendo do reaproveitamento ou do tratamento do efluente.…”
