SUMMARYThe structural stability and restructuring ability of a soil are related to the methods of crop management and soil preparation. A recommended strategy to reduce the effects of soil preparation is to use crop rotation and cover crops that help conserve and restore the soil structure. The aim of this study was to evaluate and quantify the homogeneous morphological units in soil under conventional mechanized tillage and animal traction, as well as to assess the effect on the soil structure of intercropping with jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.). Profiles were analyzed in April of 2006, in five counties in the Southern-Central region of Paraná State (Brazil), on family farms producing maize (Zea mays L.), sometimes intercropped with jack bean. The current structures in the crop profile were analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and subsequently principal component analysis (PCA) to generate statistics. Morphostructural soil analysis showed a predominance of compact units in areas of high-intensity cultivation under mechanized traction. The cover crop did not improve the structure of the soil with low porosity and compact units that hamper the root system growth. In areas exposed to animal traction, a predominance of cracked units was observed, where roots grew around the clods and along the gaps between them.Index terms: soil tillage, cultural profile, morphological homogeneous units, structural recovering.(

RESUMOO sistema de plantio direto já está consagrado como sistema conservacionista de cultivo agrícola, o que motivou este trabalho, através do qual se visa analisar o tempo de consolidação deste sistema, considerando-se cultivos de milho com plantio direto implantado entre 2 e 14 anos. Esta análise foi feita por meio da medição da área das estruturas presentes no perfil cultural do solo com um SIG e, posteriormente avaliada pelo método estatístico de componentes principais. Constatou-se que as estruturas onde o plantio direto foi implantado há menos de 8 anos assemelharam-se às estruturas do sistema de plantio convencional, e quando implantado há mais de 9 anos, assemelharam-se às estruturas do perfil de floresta, concluindo-se que o período de consolidação do sistema de plantio direto situa-se entre o 9° e o 10° ano após a sua implantação, para as condições da área estudada. O excesso de detalhamento na nomenclatura das unidades morfologicamente homogêneas dificultou a análise dos dados.Palavras-chave: geoprocessamento, análise de componentes principais, unidades morfologicamente homogêneas, ArcView, método do perfil cultural Analysis of consolidation time of no-tillage system ABSTRACT The no-tillage system has already been acclaimed as a conservational system of agricultural cultivation, what has motivated this work, through which it was aimed to analyze the consolidation time of this system, considering maize plantations with no-tillage system implemented between 2 to 14 years. This analysis has been done through the measuring of areas of the present structures in the cropping profile with GIS and later, evaluated by the statistical method of principal components. The structures where no-tillage system has been implemented for less than eight years are similar to conventional cultivation, and where it has been implemented for more than nine years are similar to forest cultivation, leading to the conclusion that the period of consolidation of no-tillage system is between the ninth and tenth year after its implementation, for the conditions of the analyzed area. The excess of details in the nomenclature of morphological homogeneous units makes the data analysis difficult.

Atlantic forest biome in Brazil has high biodiversity that is threated due to fragmentation and its remnants retain important residual flora that should be preserved. Studies of environmental conditions that influence species occurrence in those areas are very important to preserve them. This study characterized two remnants vegetation in the Biological Reserve, Pindorama-SP, Brazil, classified as seasonal semideciduous forest sampled in 65 plots of 400 m 2 , using soil attributes and vegetation data. Soil attributes altitude, basal area, height and number of trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were evaluated in the plots and non-arboreous species infestation was evaluated in a randomly drawn quadrant of 100 m 2 . The hierarchical clustering, based on soil attributes, separated plots in two major groups and five subgroups of similarity used to characterize the vegetation and the species diversity, by the Shannon Index (H') and the Pielou Equitability Coefficient (J). Soil attributes influenced endemic trees and non-arborous vegetation showing that preservation of native vegetation should consider these species relationships. Plots with higher clay percentage and higher fertility had higher infestation of non-arboreous plants as bamboo, lianas and different grasses species and had lower species diversity, basal area and height of tree species.
