An optimized and validated spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in pharmaceutical formulations. The method is based on the reaction between TCH, sodium nitroprusside and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in alkaline medium. The product absorbed maximally at 529 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the working concentration range of 2-60 µg mL-1 with apparent molar absorptivity of 5.049×10 3 L mol-1 cm-1 and Sandell's sensitivity of 0.0952 µg cm 2 / 0.001 absorbance unit. The proposed procedure was applied successfully for estimation of drug in different commercial forms. The proposed method was applied to the determination of the studied drug in pharmaceutical formulations and the results demonstrated that the method is equally accurate and precise as the official method as found from the t-and F-values.

Antibiotics have an unquestionable importance in the treatment of many infections. Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic belonging to the class of tetracyclines, available for use in human and veterinary medicine. Development of analytical methods that prove the quality and efficacy of these drugs is fundamentally important to the pharmaceutical industry. In this context, the research presents an overview of the analytical profile of oxytetracycline, describing its chemical and pharmacological properties, and analytical methods for quantification of this drug in biological samples and pharmaceutical products. Oxytetracycline can be analyzed in these matrices by many types of methodologies. However, high-performance liquid chromatography is the most widely used, being recommended by official compendia. This kind of study can be useful to support the development of new efficient and sustainable analytical methods that may be utilized in the quality control routine of oxytetracycline in pharmaceutical products and pharmacokinetic monitoring in biological samples.

Recebido em 26/2/11; aceito em 18/7/11; publicado na web em 19/8/11A spectrophotometric method based on the formation of ion-pair complex between haloperidol and eriochrome black T (EBT) at pH 1.85 has been described. The formed complex was extracted quantitatively into chloroform and measured at 510 nm. Infra red (IR) studies were performed to confirm the formation of ion-pair complex. Beer's law was obeyed in the concentration range of 2.0-9.0 μg mL -1 with molar absorptivity of 2.67 × 10 4 L mol -1 cm -1 . The detection limit was found to be 0.18 μg mL -1 . Statistical comparison of the results of the proposed method with those of the reference method shows excellent agreement and indicates no significant difference in accuracy and precision.

Abstract: for TC and DXC, respectively. The analytical frequency was 50 h −1 and 45 h -1 for TC and DXC, respectively. The results obtained by the proposed method were in good agreement with those obtained by the official method at 95% confidence level.
