The importance of mineral nutrition to the various plant species has been recognized for many years. Since nutrients are directly linked to physiological and metabolic processes, they promote the growth of rootstocks and seedlings, contributing to the formation of more productive orchards. As a consequence of the lack of technical information for most fruit trees, fertilization in nurseries has still been carried out empirically, sometimes underestimating or overestimating nutritional requirements and compromising the quality of plants produced. Given the importance of mineral nutrition in the formation of high-quality seedlings and the lack of scientific information on the topic, the aim of the present review was to raise interest in further research, and contribute to produce nutritionally balanced fruit seedlings.

RESUMO -O trabalho avaliou os efeitos do uso de fita fotodegradável de enxertia em mudas de laranjeira 'Valência' enxertadas em limoeiro 'Cravo' e citrumeleiro 'Swingle', em viveiro telado, em Bebedouro-SP, durante os meses de setembro a novembro de 2009. Para cada porta-enxerto, foram avaliados três tratamentos, que incluíram o uso da fita convencional de polietileno para a fixação da borbulha e a fita fotodegradável, por sua vez aplicada sob duas formas: com e sem envolvimento completo da gema. As variáveis avaliadas foram: tempo consumido na operação de amarrio da fita, porcentagem de borbulhas brotadas, comprimento e diâmetro do enxerto e porcentagem de mudas prontas para comercialização. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com seis tratamentos e quatro repetições. Cada parcela foi representada por 12 plantas. Os tratamentos com a fita fotodegradável, com e sem envolvimento da gema, anteciparam a brotação do enxerto, apesar de o tempo gasto no amarrio da fita ser significativamente maior em relação ao método convencional. Quando o porta-enxerto utilizado é o citrumeleiro Swingle, menos vigoroso, recomenda-se manter a gema descoberta para evitar redução acentuada da brotação do enxerto. EVALUATION OF PHOTODEGRADABLE TAPE ON GRAFTING IN CITRUS NURSERY TREESABSTRACT -The use of a photodegradable tape was evaluated on 'Valencia' sweet orange nursery trees budded both on Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo in a greenhouse in Bebedouro-SP, Brazil, from September to November 2009. On both rootstocks three wrapping procedures were evaluated: i) conventional polyethylene tape wrapped around the bud eye; ii) photodegradable tape wrapped around the bud eye, and iii) photodegradable tape wrapped around the graft junction without covering the bud eye. The following variables were measured: time spent for wrapping, percentage of bud sprouting, length and stem diameter of the scion shoot, and percentage of commercially valuable nursery trees. The trial was conducted following a randomized complete block design, with six treatments, four replications and 12 trees per plot. The use of photodegradable tape, with or without covering the bud eye, anticipated bud sprouting; despite of the longer time spent with wrapping when the photodegradable tape was used. Plants grafted onto the less vigorous Swingle citrumelo rootstock showed lower bud sprout percentages when the bud eye was covered with the photodegradable tape.

Water and nutrient solution excess is directly disposed into the soil and may cause salinization, in addition to serious environmental impacts and increase of production costs (GIRARDI et al, 2010;SOUZA et al, 2011b;FERRAREZI et al, 2012). Adequate irrigation management and mitigation of any environmental impacts are necessary for sustainable plant production, especially because the current regulations do not specify recommendations for water and nutrient management.…”

Brazil produces grafted citrus seedlings in closed screen houses to reduce pest and disease incidence. Irrigation is usually performed by hand using either breaker nozzles or drilled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe wands on garden hoses. Rootstocks are produced in cone-shaped containers filled with soilless potting mix. Since the containers have a small upper diameter, nutrient solution capture is reduced with the potential to cause environmental contamination from inefficient fertigation. This study provides a method to assess the efficiency of manual overhead irrigation systems used in liner production. The method consists of determining both the volume of water applied and volume lost (i.e., directly and by percolation) in order to obtain an estimate of the percentage of water loss, irrigation efficiency, and the drainage fraction. The method was tested in a commercial facility under standard production practices. The method's attributes included simplicity, quick sampling and data collection, and accuracy. The evaluated nursery was found to have low irrigation efficiency (27.14%) and excessive nutrient solution losses (72.86%). Considering an average production of 300,000 liners per year on 20,000 m 2 , we determined an annual solution loss of 221.8 m 3 with an average environmental release of 158.9 kg of fertilizer. Therefore, more efficient irrigation systems are necessary for sustainable citrus rootstock liners production.
