ABSTRACT ROOT DISTRIBUTION OF FERTIRRIGATED COFFEE TREES IN CAMPINAS, STATE OF SÃO PAULO, BRAZILThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of the drip fertirrigation system, by using emitters with different arranging of spaces (0.50 or 0.80 m) and depths of installation (superficial, 0.10 or 0.20 m on the ground), over the root spatial distribution of coffee tree. The coffee tree conventionally irrigated and fertilized presented different conditions of root development, varying according to the treatment imposed. For plants irrigated by emitters spaced every 0.50 m, the effective root depth was smaller (mean of 0.63 m) than that observed for plants irrigated by emitters spaced every 0.80 m (mean of 0.70 m). The fertirrigation nutritional management allowed an uniform effective root depth among the treatments, as well as an increase of 51.1% in root density. There was a trend of maintenance of root volume in the places closer to the emitters, while in the most distant points of development of wet bulb, the growth of roots reached 77%. The plants irrigated by 0.10 m depth emitters provided the largest root development in response to fertirrigation.
Capillary water rise in coconut and pine bark substrates AbstractThe capillary irrigation in nursery production could give advantages in water use and its correct application demands knowledge about capillary water rise through root growth media, an attribute poorly studied. This research had as objective to evaluate water capillary rise in commercial pine and coconut substrates for two particle size distributions and two moisture conditions, to indicate the substrate with the best physical characteristics for capillary irrigation. The capillary rise determination method was applied on disassembled rings column filled with substrates, evaluating the following contact durations of the column bottom with water surface: 0. 25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24 hours, with 10 repetitions per time. The results showed that the fine pine and coconut substrates had the higher water rise during the 24 hours test. Moreover, the hydrophobic state presented by coconut substrate indicated high irrigation frequencies for this material in comparison to pine substrate, avoiding that drying conditions become irreversible. The pine bark substrate did not show this problem, needing longer irrigation intervals, especially with the fine texture one. Due to the greater water holding and water rise capacity for wet conditions, the fine coconut substrate showed more suitable for capillary irrigation in small recipients.
Brazil produces grafted citrus seedlings in closed screen houses to reduce pest and disease incidence. Irrigation is usually performed by hand using either breaker nozzles or drilled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe wands on garden hoses. Rootstocks are produced in cone-shaped containers filled with soilless potting mix. Since the containers have a small upper diameter, nutrient solution capture is reduced with the potential to cause environmental contamination from inefficient fertigation. This study provides a method to assess the efficiency of manual overhead irrigation systems used in liner production. The method consists of determining both the volume of water applied and volume lost (i.e., directly and by percolation) in order to obtain an estimate of the percentage of water loss, irrigation efficiency, and the drainage fraction. The method was tested in a commercial facility under standard production practices. The method's attributes included simplicity, quick sampling and data collection, and accuracy. The evaluated nursery was found to have low irrigation efficiency (27.14%) and excessive nutrient solution losses (72.86%). Considering an average production of 300,000 liners per year on 20,000 m 2 , we determined an annual solution loss of 221.8 m 3 with an average environmental release of 158.9 kg of fertilizer. Therefore, more efficient irrigation systems are necessary for sustainable citrus rootstock liners production.
Barreto. C.V.G.; Sakai, E.; Pires, R.C. de M.; Arruda, F.B.WET BULB EVALUATION TECHNIQUE USING MULTIPLE SLICES ON SOIL PITS 2 Abstract Technique of soil pit for wet bulbs studies is recommended as one of the many practices in water management on plantations under trickle irrigation. The development of this technique with multiple slices on pit wall at different distances from the emitters allows gathering more data besides the ones on diameter and depth of the wet bulb. The superficial and subsuperficial wet areas and their depths as well as the wet bulb profile along the irrigation line were obtained. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of wet bulb formed under different configurations of trickle irrigation during the braking of bud dormancy in coffee plantation. The treatments used two factors, distance between emitters (50 cm(50) and80 cm(80)) and installation depth (superficial installation (0), buried installation at10 cm(10) and buried installation at20 cm(20)) in six treatments, T1 (50-0), T2 (50-10), T3 (50-20), T4 (80-0), T5 (80-10) and T6 (80-20). The principal observed results showed a smaller superficial wet area for subsuperficial trickle irrigation, tendency for percolation and bad continuity of wet zone in the soil along the 80-cm lines. This technique is appropriate for trick irrigation management KEY WORDS: trickle irrigation, wet areas, buried irrigation, irrigation management.
