The use of alternative foods, such as agroindustrial residues, for animal feeding aims to reduce production costs and increase animal productivity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of licury cake added to the diet of non-standardbred lambs (NSB). The study involved 20 male castrated NSB lambs, with an average age of 120±5 days and initial and final average weights of 25±2 kg and 34±2 kg, respectively; the lambs were kept in a feedlot and distributed in a completely random block design for 75 days. Three isonitrogenic diets (17% protein) with three levels of licury cake supplementation (8, 16 and 24%) and a control diet (0% licury cake) were used. Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) concentrate in a 50:50 ratio and the different levels of licuri cake were provided twice a day. The residue normality and variances compared by orthogonal and polynomial regression contrasts were verified for data analysis at 5% significance. The licury cake levels did not influence (P>0.05) the dry matter intake, minimum and maximum fat thickness, empty gastrointestinal tract, spleen, heart, kidneys, anterior and posterior quarters, muscle yield, marbling, other tissues or ash. There was a quadratic effect (P<0.05) for the average daily weight, skin yield and crude protein. Increasing the levels of licury cake reduced (P<0.05) real yield, loin eye area, and increased (P<0.05) leg yield, bone and moisture. A diet including up to 13% licury cake can be indicated as an alternative feeding source for feedlot NSB sheep.Index terms: Centesimal composition; byproduct; liver. RESUMOO uso de alimentos alternativos na dieta animal, como resíduos agroindustriais, tem como propósito reduzir os custos de produção e aumentar a produtividade animal. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inclusão de diferentes níveis de torta de licuri em dieta de cordeiros sem padrão racial definido (SPRD). Foram confinados 20 cordeiros, machos e castrados, com idade média de 120±5 dias, distribuídos em delineamento em blocos inteiramente casualizados, durante 75 dias. Foram utilizadas três dietas isonitrogenadas (17% de proteína), sendo três níveis de inclusão de torta de licuri (8, 16 e 24%) e uma ração testemunha (0%). Foi fornecido o capim elefante (Pennisetum purpureum) e concentrado na proporção de 50:50 e os diferentes níveis de torta, fornecidas duas vezes ao dia. Para análise dos dados, foi verificada a normalidade dos resíduos e as variâncias comparadas por contrastes ortogonais e regressão polinomial, considerando nível de significância de 5%. Os níveis de torta de licuri não influenciaram (P>0,05) o consumo de matéria seca, espessura de gordura mínima e máxima, trato gastrintestinal vazio, baço, coração, rins, quarto dianteiros e traseiros, rendimento de músculo, gordura intermuscular, outros tecidos e cinzas. We aimed to determine the optimal inclusion level of sunflower cake (0, 90, 180, and 270 g/kg total DM) as a partial replacement of soybean meal and corn ground in young bulls’ diets by examining nutrient intake and digestibility, ingestive behavior, nitrogen balance, metabolic serum profile, growth performance, and carcass traits. Thirty-two intact Nellore bulls (BW 374 ± 42.5) were distributed in a completely randomized design. The experiment lasted 90 days. The final BW of the animals was 515.25 ± 24.7. There was a linear decrease effect in the intake of DM, crude protein and nonfibrous carbohydrates, eating and rumination efficiency, N-urinary, N-total excretion, and blood urea nitrogen. Sunflower cake did not affect the NDF digestibility, nitrogen (N)-fecal excretion, blood metabolites, Longissimus lumborum muscle area, or subcutaneous fat deposition. There were linear and quadratic effects on the eating and rumination time, microbial protein production and efficiency, gamma-glutamyl transferase and cholesterol serum concentrations, and muscle carcass tissue. There was a quadratic effect on ether extract intake, final BW, and total gain with the inclusion of sunflower cake in the young bull’s diet. The replacement of soybean meal and corn ground with sunflower cake at the level of 90 g/kg of DM in the diet of young bulls is recommended because it reduces the DM intake and digestibility, increases microbial protein synthesis and muscle tissue deposition, and consequently improves the performance, feed efficiency, and carcass traits.

The objective was to investigate the effect of supplementing Awassi lambs fed low-quality forage with soybean meal. Twenty-one lambs (initial body weight (BW) of 26.1 ± 2.57 kg) were randomly assigned to the study diets, 1) the basal diet (forage mix; CON; n = 7); 2) the basal diet supplemented with either 125 (SBM125; n = 7); or 3) with 250 (SBM250; n = 7) SBM g/head/day. The forage mix was composed of 65% wheat straw and 35% alfalfa hay. The experimental diet was offered to the animals for 54 days. On day 40, four animals from each group were chosen to assess N balance and nutrient digestibility. The intake of crude protein (CP) and dry matter (DM) was the highest (p < 0.016) in the SBM250 group, followed by the SBM125 group and the CON diet. Digestibility of DM and CP was higher (p <0.05) for the SBM-containing diets than the CON diet. Final BW and average daily gain were greater (p < 0.008) for lambs that consumed SBM-containing diets than for those that consumed the CON diet. In summary, the growth performance, forage utilization, and nutrient digestibility improved for lambs fed low-quality forage when supplemented with soybean meal.
