Two experiments were conducted to assess the endogenous fraction of purine derivative (PD) excretion, urinary recovery, and intestinal digestibility of purines in Nellore heifers. For both experiments, 8 Nellore heifers fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannulas were allocated to two 4 × 4 Latin squares. The diets were based on corn silage and concentrate (60 and 40% DM basis, respectively); feces and urine samples were obtained by total collection, and abomasal DM flow was estimated using indigestible NDF as an internal marker. In Exp. I, 4 of the 8 heifers (BW 258 ± 20 kg) were also fitted with ileal cannula. The planned treatments were 4 different DMI: 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.4% of BW (DM basis). The endogenous losses and purine recovery as urinary PD were estimated using linear regression between daily urinary PD excretion (Y) and daily abomasal flow of purine bases (X), expressed in millimoles per kilogram of BW(0.75). In Exp. II, the same 8 Nellore heifers (BW of 296 ± 15 kg) were fed at 1.37% BW (DM basis). The treatments were the infusion of purines (RNA from torula yeast, type VI, Sigma) into the abomasum in increasing amounts (0, 33, 66, and 100 mmol/d). All statistical analyses were performed using the PROC MIXED procedure in SAS. In Exp. I, the DMI range was 1.16 to 1.84% of BW and did not affect (P > 0.05) the apparent RNA digestibility in the small intestine, which had a mean of 75.6%, and a true digestibility of 93.0%. The mean ratio of the N-RNA to the total-N in the ruminal bacteria was 0.137. The daily urinary PD excretion (Y, mmol/kg of BW(0.75)) was a function of RNA flow in the abomasum (X, mmol/kg of BW(0.75)): Y = 0.860X + 0.460, where 0.860 and 0.460 were the PD recovery of purines and the endogenous fraction (in mmol/kg of BW(0.75)), respectively. In Exp. II, the daily urinary PD excretion was a function of RNA flow in the abomasum: Y = 0.741X + 0.301, where 0.741 and 0.301 were the recovery of PD in urine of infused purines and the endogenous losses (in mmol/kg of BW(0.75)), respectively. In conclusion, our data suggest that in Nellore heifers the respective values of endogenous PD excretion (mmol/kg of BW(0.75)), urinary recovery of the purines absorbed in the abomasum, and true digestibility of RNA in the small intestine were 0.30, 0.80, and 0.93.

This experiment evaluated the effect of 2 levels of diet concentrate (20 and 40% of DM) and 2 levels of ruminally undegraded protein (RUP: 25 and 40% of CP) on nutrient intake, total and partial apparent nutrient digestibility, microbial protein synthesis, and ruminal and physiological variables. Eight Nellore heifers (233 +/- 14 kg of BW) fitted with ruminal, abomasal, and ileal cannulas were used. The animals were held in individual sheltered pens of approximately 15 m(2) and fed twice daily at 0800 and 1600 h for ad libitum intake. Heifers were allocated in two 4 x 4 Latin square designs, containing 8 heifers, 4 experimental periods, and 4 treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. All statistical analyses were performed using PROC MIXED of SAS. Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) and chromic oxide (Cr(2)O(3)) were used to estimate digesta fluxes and fecal excretion. Purine derivative (PD) excretion and abomasal purine bases were used to estimate the microbial N (MN) synthesis. No significant interaction (P > 0.10) between dietary levels of RUP and concentrate was observed. There was no effect of treatment (P = 0.24) on DMI. Both markers led to the same estimates of fecal, abomasal, and ileal DM fluxes, and digestibilities of DM and individual nutrients. Ruminal pH was affected by sampling time (P < 0.001), but no interaction between treatment and sampling time was observed (P = 0.71). There was an interaction between treatment and sampling time (P < 0.001) for ruminal NH(3)-N concentration. A linear decrease (P = 0.04) over sampling time was observed for the higher level of RUP, whereas a quadratic effect (P < 0.001) of sampling time was observed for the lower level of RUP. The higher level of dietary concentrate led to greater MN yield regardless of the level of RUP. The MN yield and the efficiency of microbial yield estimated from urinary PD excretion produced greater (P < 0.01) values than those estimated by either TiO(2) or Cr(2)O(3), which did not differ (P = 0.63) from each other. However, all methods yielded values that were within the range reported in the literature. In conclusion, no interactions between dietary levels of RUP and concentrate were observed for ruminal and digestive parameters. Neither RUP nor concentrate level affected DMI. Titanium dioxide showed to be similar to Cr(2)O(3) as an external marker to measure digestibility and nutrient fluxes in cattle.

RESUMO -Avaliou-se nesta pesquisa o efeito da inclusão de óxido de cálcio (cal) e dos tempos de exposição da canade-açúcar à cal sobre o desempenho de novilhas Nelore, a digestibilidade dos componentes da dieta e a síntese de proteína microbiana ruminal (PBMic) e comparou-se o dióxido de titânio ao óxido crômico para estimar o consumo individual de concentrado. Utilizaram-se 30 fêmeas Nelore com aproximadamente 24 meses de idade e pesos médios de 285 ± 31 kg, alojadas em seis baias coletivas. As dietas foram arranjadas em esquema fatorial 3 × 2, com três níveis de cal (0; 0,5 ou 1% na matéria natural) e dois tempos de exposição (zero e três dias). Os tempos de exposição da cana-de-açúcar à cal não tiveram efeitos sobre as quantidades de nitrogênio microbiano, os consumos de matéria seca (MS) e orgânica (MO), proteína bruta (PB), total de nutrientes digestíveis e o ganho médio diário, porém influenciaram os consumos de extrato etéreo (EE), fibra em detergente neutro corrigida para cinzas e PB (FDNcp) e carboidratos não-fibrosos (CNF). Os níveis de cal influenciaram de forma linear decrescente os consumos de MO, FDNcp, CNF e NDT, e o GMD. Todavia, não foram observados efeitos dos indicadores (dióxido de titânio e óxido crômico) nem interações do tempo de exposição e do nível de cal sobre os consumos de MS, MO, PB, EE, FDNcp, CNF e NDT. Interações significativas do tempo de exposição e do nível de inclusão de cal foram observadas para as digestibilidades aparentes totais da MS, MO, PB e FDN e para o teor de NDT. Os indicadores dióxido de titânio e óxido crômico são igualmente efetivos para estimar os consumos individuais de concentrado de bovinos alimentados em grupo. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of feeding licuri cake to lambs on the sensory characteristics, physicochemical characteristics and fatty acid (FA) profile of meat from lambs. Forty-four crossbred Santa Ines lambs (21.2 ± 2.70 kg body weight; 6 months old) were housed in individual pens and fed 4 experimental diets, containing 0, 8, 16 or 24% licuri cake (DM basis). The averages concentrations of ash (11.4), pH (5.82), lightness (38.1), cooking loss (26.8) or shear-force resistance (2.48) of lamb meat were not affected by the licuri cake diets. However, there was a linear decrease (P < 0.01) of redness and chroma indexes, lipid and protein contents, whereas the moisture content of the meat (P < 0.001) increased linearly due to the inclusion of licuri cake in lambs’ diets. The licuri cake inclusion in the lambs feed linearly increased (P < 0.05) the fatty acids concentrations of C12:0, C17:0, C20:0, C20:1, C18:3, C20:3, C20:4 and ΣPUFA/ΣMUFA ratio, Σω–3 and atherogenicity index (AI). However, C18:1 cis, C20:2, C20:5, ΣMUFA, ΣMUFA/ΣSFA and Σω–6:Σω–3 ratios in the longissimus lumborum of lambs linearly decreased by licuri cake inclusion. There was a quadratic increase (P < 0.05) on C14:0 (maximum point 4.94 g/100 g FAME to 14.5% licuri inclusion), C16:1 (maximum point 8.59 g/100 g FAME to 10.7% licuri inclusion) and enzymatic activities of Δ9-desaturase C16 (maximum point 27.5 g/100 g FAME to 10.6% licuri inclusion) in the longissimus lumborum of lambs fed due to increased concentrations of licuri cake. However, there was a quadratic decrease (P = 0.04) in ΣPUFA/ΣSFA ratio with minimum concentration of 0.63 g/100 g FAME to 11.1% inclusion. The inclusion of licuri cake in the lambs diet did not change (P > 0.05) the concentrations of SFA C10:0, C15:0, C16:0, C18:0, C14:1, MUFA C18:1 trans, PUFA C18:2 cis, CLA, total sum of ΣSFA and ΣPUFA, desirable fatty acids (DFA), hypocholesterolemic:hypercholesterolemic index, and elongase and Δ9-desaturase C18 enzymes. Licuri cake in the lamb diet improved (P < 0.05) meat aroma, flavor and overall acceptance by consumers. Licuri cake inclusion in the diet of lambs improves sensory attributes of meat and the meat fatty acid profile becomes nutritionally healthier for the human diet because do not affect major FA of meat; however, the growth performance of finishing lambs is reduced.

O efeito do período de coleta de urina sobre a excreção urinária de creatinina, uréia e derivados de purinas (DP), as purinas absorvidas e a produção de compostos nitrogenados microbianos (Nmic) foi avaliado em bovinos Nelore de quatro categorias: novilhas, machos castrados, machos não-castrados e vacas em lactação. A produção de Nmic obtida em amostras spot de urina foi comparada àquela obtida via coleta total. Dezesseis animais da raça Nelore mantidos em confinamento foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, tendo nas parcelas os tratamentos em esquema fatorial 2 x 4 (dois níveis de concentrado, 25 ou 50%, e quatro categorias de bovinos, novilhas, machos castrados, machos não-castrados e vacas em lactação) e nas subparcelas os seis dias de coleta. Não houve interação entre níveis de concentrado, categorias de animal e dias de coleta para as variáveis avaliadas. O volume urinário não foi influenciado pelos níveis de concentrado e os dias de coleta, contudo, foi significativamente maior para as vacas. A excreção de creatinina não foi afetada pelos tratamentos e dias de coletas, observando-se média de 27,1 mg/kg0,75. As purinas absorvidas e a produção de Nmic também não foram influenciadas pelos tratamentos e os dias de coleta. A produção de Nmic, estimada pela amostra spot de urina, não diferiu daquela obtida pela coleta total, nem entre os níveis de concentrado ou entre as categorias de animal. Concluiu-se que o período de coleta de urina de 24 horas é suficiente para experimentos utilizando animais Nelore, independentemente de serem novilhas, machos castrados ou não-castrados ou vacas, e que a coleta de amostra spot de urina também pode ser usada para estimar a produção de Nmic.
