Ingestive behavior of dairy goats fed on cocoa meal or palm cakeAbstract -The objective of this work was to study the effects of different cocoa meal and palm cake levels (0, 15 and 30%) in substitution to corn and soybean meal, on the ingestive behavior of five non-pregnant lactating Saanen goats, with initial body weight of 41.6 kg. Animals were housed in individual barns during five experimental periods and were distribuided in a 5x5 latin square desing. Each animal was observed in each treatment, at the end of the experimental period, during 24 hours, with 10 minutes intervals. The roughage used was corn silage in 40:60 roughage:concentrate proportion. There was no difference in the feeding, ruminating and idle times. Although animals receiving 30% cocoa meal showed a reduction in dry matter intake, the feeding efficiency, in g of DM/h and g of NDF/h, was similar in all treatments. Rumination efficiency, in g of DM/h and g of NDF/h, and DM and grams of DM of NDF/ruminated boli were decreased by 30% cocoa meal. The total chewing time (h/day), the number of ruminated (boli/day), the ruminating chews (no/day and no/boli) and the time of ruminating chews boli (sec/boli) did not show any significant difference. The cocoa meal or palm cake inclusion in the diet influenced some ingestive behavior parameters.
It was used a complete randomized experimental design in 4 x 2 factorial scheme, being four phosphorus doses (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg of P 2 O 5 /ha) and two doses of nitrogen (0 and 100 kg of N/ha), with four replicates. It was utilized pots with 6.3 liters capacity each, leaving four plants per pot after staging. The N and P combination affected leaf elongation rate, stem elongation rate, number of tillers per plant, and number of green leaves per tillers. Nitrogen supply had a positive effect on leaf appearance rate, number of leaves, and final leaf length of tanzaniagrass. The majority of the studied variables were affected by the use of phosphorus when associated to N fertilization.
Palavras chave: caprino, subprodutos, leite de cabra Effects of Feeding Cocoa Meal (Theobroma cacao L.) and Palm Kernel Cake (Elaeis guineensis, Jacq) on Milk Intake and Yield for Lactating GoatsABSTRACT -The effects of replacing corn and soybean meal with cocoa meal (CF) or palm kernel cake (PKC) in the concentrate on milk intake and yield of goats were evaluated. Five Saanen goats, averaging 2 kg daily milk yield at 60 days of lactation, were assigned to a 5 x 5 Latin square experimental design. The experiment lasted 14 days, with 10 days for adaptation period and four days for sample collection. Diets contained: 36% of roughage (corns silage) and 64% of concentrate, dry matter basis, formulated toyield 13.2% of crude protein. The treatments were as follows: 0, 15 and 30% CF or PKC, all with concentrate (corn and soybean meal). Dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, total digestible nutrients, total carbohydrates and nonfiber carbohydrates intakes decreased as affected by the highest replacement level (30% CF). No significant differences on neutral detergent fiber and ether extract intake were observed. Acid detergent fiber intake differed only between 30% PKC and 30% CF-based diets, with 0.94 and 0.59% body weight, respectively. The 30% CFbased diet showed lower milk production value, as kg/dia (1.208 kg), but similar to 30% PKC-based diet, when corrected for 3.5% fat. Replacing corn and soybean with CF and PKC in the diet of lactating goats is viable up to 9.13 and 18.81% dry matter, res...
Palavras-chave: conservação de forragens, forrageira, Pennisetum purpureum, subproduto, Theobroma cacao L. Carbohydrate fractioning of elephantgrass silage wilted or enriched with cocoa mealABSTRACT -The experiment was carried out to determine the carbohydrate fractions of elephantgrass silage wilted under the sun for eight hours. Other treatments included the same elephantgrass without wilting but with addition of 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28% of cocoa meal at the ensiling process. The PVC silos used in the experiment had 5.3 L of capacity, and they were opened 45 days after ensiling. The wilted treatment showed total carbohydrate (TC) concentration similar to treatments with 14 and 21% cocoa meal. The regression analysis detected linear reduction of this fraction with the addition of cocoa meal. For all carbohydrate estimated fractions, the wilted treatment showed similar values to the treatment without wilting. The silage TC fractions were altered by cocoa meal addictions, presenting high concentration of A+B1, and NDFi, and low concentration of B2 with increasing cocoa meal level.
This study aimed to evaluate sunflower cake feed in commercial cut yields and chemical and sensory attributes of goat meat. Thirty-two castrated male goats were distributed in four levels (0, 8, 16 and 24%) of sunflower cake supplementation. The animals were slaughtered and the carcasses were placed in a cold chamber and sectioned into five anatomical regions corresponding to commercial cuts. Samples of the Longissimus lumborum muscle were analyzed for chemical composition and sensory quality. The chemical composition and pH were not affected by the treatments. The smell, taste and 'goatiness' of the aroma and flavor of the meat were also unaffected by the treatments. The appearance, tenderness and juiciness of the meat differed by treatment. The highest level (24%) of sunflower cake increased meat tenderness; however, according to the tasters there was reduced softness, although none of the samples were rejected by the tasters. Sunflower cake can be added to the diet at a level of up to 16% without altering the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the meat.
Lactoferrin is a protein that is present in cheese whey (a waste product from the dairy industry) and has several biological activities. However, its production from whey must have a high yield and low cost for industrial applications. As such, this study reports the use of polyacrylamide cryogel, loaded with Cu(2+) (through the bond with iminodiacetic acid (IDA)), as an adsorbent for the chromatographic process to capture lactoferrin whey. Ultrafiltered cheese whey was passed through the cryogel-IDA-Cu(2+) system. The eluates were subjected to analysis of total protein, SDS-PAGE and size exclusion chromatography. The results showed an axial dispersion coefficients, at different superficial velocities of liquid, in a range of 10(-6)-10(-5)m(2)/s. The cryogel demonstrated good hydraulic permeability (4.7086×10(-13)m(2)) and a porosity of approximately 78.2%. The IDA-Cu(2+) cryogel system was also able to capture lactoferrin in high purity.
Palavras-chave: conservação de forragem, Pennisetum purpureum, resíduo, subproduto Fractioning of carbohydrates and protein of elephant grass silages with coffee hulls, cocoa meal and cassava mealABSTRACT -This experiment was carried out to evaluate the fractions that compose carbohydrates and protein from elephant grass silage with 15% of coffee hulls, cocoa meal or cassava meal.
