This study evaluated the cervical transposition method as a tool to select ewes for embryo collection by transcervical route. Adult Santa Inês ewes (n = 50) received Day 0 protocol for superovulation treatments. The cervix transposition test was performed both at oestrus and at the embryo collection time. The latter was preceded by hormonal cervical dilation. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were 85.7%, 66.6%, 85.7%, 66.6% and 80.0%, respectively. The kappa index yielded a moderate score (κ = 0.52). In conclusion, the high sensitivity and accuracy indicate that the cervical transposition test is a screening option to select ewes for embryo collection by transcervical route.

The use of alternative foods, such as agroindustrial residues, for animal feeding aims to reduce production costs and increase animal productivity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of licury cake added to the diet of non-standardbred lambs (NSB). The study involved 20 male castrated NSB lambs, with an average age of 120±5 days and initial and final average weights of 25±2 kg and 34±2 kg, respectively; the lambs were kept in a feedlot and distributed in a completely random block design for 75 days. Three isonitrogenic diets (17% protein) with three levels of licury cake supplementation (8, 16 and 24%) and a control diet (0% licury cake) were used. Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) concentrate in a 50:50 ratio and the different levels of licuri cake were provided twice a day. The residue normality and variances compared by orthogonal and polynomial regression contrasts were verified for data analysis at 5% significance. The licury cake levels did not influence (P>0.05) the dry matter intake, minimum and maximum fat thickness, empty gastrointestinal tract, spleen, heart, kidneys, anterior and posterior quarters, muscle yield, marbling, other tissues or ash. There was a quadratic effect (P<0.05) for the average daily weight, skin yield and crude protein. Increasing the levels of licury cake reduced (P<0.05) real yield, loin eye area, and increased (P<0.05) leg yield, bone and moisture. A diet including up to 13% licury cake can be indicated as an alternative feeding source for feedlot NSB sheep.Index terms: Centesimal composition; byproduct; liver. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inclusão de diferentes níveis de torta de licuri em dieta de cordeiros sem padrão racial definido (SPRD). Foram confinados 20 cordeiros, machos e castrados, com idade média de 120±5 dias, distribuídos em delineamento em blocos inteiramente casualizados, durante 75 dias. Foram utilizadas três dietas isonitrogenadas (17% de proteína), sendo três níveis de inclusão de torta de licuri (8, 16 e 24%) e uma ração testemunha (0%). Foi fornecido o capim elefante (Pennisetum purpureum) e concentrado na proporção de 50:50 e os diferentes níveis de torta, fornecidas duas vezes ao dia. Para análise dos dados, foi verificada a normalidade dos resíduos e as variâncias comparadas por contrastes ortogonais e regressão polinomial, considerando nível de significância de 5%. Os níveis de torta de licuri não influenciaram (P>0,05) o consumo de matéria seca, espessura de gordura mínima e máxima, trato gastrintestinal vazio, baço, coração, rins, quarto dianteiros e traseiros, rendimento de músculo, gordura intermuscular, outros tecidos e cinzas. Because of the features of the ovine cervix, including a narrow lumen and misaligned folds, access to the uterine lumen through the cervical canal is particularly challenging in this species (Halbert, Dobson, Walton, & Buckrell, 1990). Therefore, surgical procedures are commonly applied in assisted reproductive technologies in sheep when access to the uterine lumen is needed (Candappa & Bartlewski, 2011, 2014). Surgical intervention is not desired in assisted reproductive technologies because it can lead to the formation of adhesions in the reproductive tract (up to 30%) (Bruno-Galarraga et al., 2014; Pinto et al., 2020) and, consequently, reproductive impairment.

Resynchronization protocols have been proposed as a way of shortening females' unproductive time in the flock, with good results in cattle and sheep. In goats, initial studies have shown that a second progestogen device inserted before luteolysis and pregnancy diagnosis does not interfere with the corpus luteum lifespan or functionality. This study aimed to evaluate the follicular growth, ovulation pattern and pregnancy rate after insertion of a second and new progestogen device for resynchronizing, with or without equine Chorionic Gonadotrophin (eCG), submitted to natural mating (NM) or artificial insemination (AI) to propose a viable resynchronization protocol for dairy goats. A total of 38 multiparous Saanen goats underwent a short-term progesterone protocol [six days exposed to medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) intravaginal sponges + 200 IU eCG and 0.12 mg of cloprostenol sodium on the 5 th day + 0.025 mg of lecirelin 34 hours after sponge withdrawal] and, on day 16th after the ovulation, received a new MAP device which was retained until day 21. At this moment females were split into four groups: G eCG+NM -100 IU eCG with NM; G Sal+NM -saline solution with NM; G eCG+AI -100 IU eCG with AI; and G Sal+AI -saline solution with AI. Ultrasound scans were performed every 12 h from sponge withdrawal (day 21) until 108 h after sponge withdrawal (day 25) for follicular dynamics evaluation, at 240 h (day 31) for assessing the presence of active corpus luteum, and on day 60 for pregnancy diagnosis. No differences were found regarding ovulation time, synchronization and follicle size. However, G eCG+NM presented a greater estrus manifestation rate (100%) and pregnancy rate (62.5%) when compared to G Sal+AI . In conclusion, resynchronization protocols in dairy goats may present satisfactory results.
