Two new species of Goeldichironomus Fittkau from southeast Brazil (Diptera, Chironomidae)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Two new species of Goeldichironomus Fittkau from southeast Brazil (Diptera, Chironomidae). The adult and immature stages of two new species of Goeldichironomus are described and figured. Larvae of G. luridus sp. nov., reared in the laboratory from egg masses, are abundant on organically enriched sediments of a chicken slaughter-house effluent treatment lagoon. Larvae of G. petiolicola sp. nov., live inside petioles of aquatic macrophytes such as Eichhornia azurea and Pontederia lanceolata.

“…The egg masses of the two species were maintained in petri dishes. The average development duration from egg to adult emergence was 28 (23-34) days for Goeldichironomus maculatus Strixino & Strixino, 1991 and 20 (18-22) days for Goeldichironomus luridus Trivinho- Strixino & Strixino, 2005. The larval instars of both species were determinated by the relationship between head capsule and body length sizes.…”

“…1). The youngest forms in this cluster are species of the genus Glyptotendipes, miners and foulers of living plants, which diverged from the non-specialized inhabitants of submerged substrates (Dicrotendipes) about 13.8 Mya, together with Kiefferulus Goetghebuer, 1922 and Goeldichironomus Fittkau, 1965 that are also associated with aquatic vegetation (MacKenzie, 2003;Trivinho-Strixino and Strixino, 2005). The species of Dicrotendipes form a separate branch in the cluster which is basal to Glyptotendipes; it may therefore be assumed that the ancestral form of Dicrotendipes (as a non-specialized fouler) may have given rise to the specialized foulers of various substrates (including the aquatic higher plants) and to the plant tissue miners of the genera Glyptotendipes and Kiefferulus.…”

“…Fittkau (1971) investigated chironomids collected with light traps in the Amazon region, and mentioned that Tanytarsus was a remarkably diverse genus (70 species were estimated). Despite its great diversity, only 34 species of Tanytarsus have been described from the Neotropics until now, 20 of them from Brazil (Spies & Reiss 1996, Ekrem & Reiss 1999, Sanseverino et al 2002, Trivinho-Strixino & Sanseverino 2003, Trivinho-Strixino & Strixino 2004, 2007, Sanseverino & Fittkau 2006, Strixino & Sonoda 2006, Cranston 2007, Vinogradova et al 2009.…”
