Chironomidae (Diptera) in Rio Ribeira (border between the States of São Paulo and Paraná) in an Environmental faunistic evaluation-During a program of limnological characterization, the macrobenthic community was evaluated in a section of river Ribeira, in the area included of the future reservoir UHE Tijuco Alto. In the four expeditions, during XII/95 to IX/96, samples were collected in five stations included between Criminosa stream and Eldorado city (both in São Paulo state). Faunistic data analyzed (taxonomic composition, relative participation of different taxa, and community biotic indices) permitted establish an ecological evaluation of the area. From fifteen macroinvertebrate families identified, Chironomidae (Diptera) and Elmidae (Coleoptera) were the more representatives, contributing respectively with 67.7% and 16.9% of total macroinvertebrates. Among Chironomidae predominated typical genera of sand bottom of lotic environments, with higher participation of Caladomyia > Polypedilum (Tripodura) > Polypedilum (Polypedilum). Community indices (H' = 2.65; I Mg = 4.50) and biotic indices (IB BMWP = 74; IB H = 1.75) point towards good biological quality of the water in river Ribeira.
ABSTRACT. Two new species of Goeldichironomus Fittkau from southeast Brazil (Diptera, Chironomidae). The adult and immature stages of two new species of Goeldichironomus are described and figured. Larvae of G. luridus sp. nov., reared in the laboratory from egg masses, are abundant on organically enriched sediments of a chicken slaughter-house effluent treatment lagoon. Larvae of G. petiolicola sp. nov., live inside petioles of aquatic macrophytes such as Eichhornia azurea and Pontederia lanceolata.
Male, female, pupa and larva of Tanytarsus caipira sp. n. are described and figured. Larvae were collected on the aquatic macrophyte Mayaca fluviatilis in a small pond in southeastern Brazil and reared to the adult stage. The male of T. caipira can be distinguished from all other described Tanytarsus species by the lack of a proper anal point and the long, forked, dorsal anal process. The pupa differs from other Tanytarsus species in having 2 pairs of taeniate setae on sternite VIII. The larva of T. caipira has a large Lauterborn organ placed on a short, weakly sclerotized pedicel.
