Sugar cane cultivation in the State of São Paulo has expanded in the last years, with an annual production of 200•10 6 t in an area of 2.5• 10 6 hectares. The use of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers in sugar cane plantations, together with deforestation of riparian vegetation, have caused impacts on the hydric resources of the adjacent areas. The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of sugar cane plantations on streams in the central region of the State of São Paulo, studying 16 organochlorinated compounds and 7 metals (Cu, Fe, Cd, Zn, Mn, Cr and Ni) found in the sediments of 11 streams. The results show that there is a higher concentration of metals and organochlorinated compounds in streams without riparian vegetation when compared to forested areas.Keywords: sugar cane cultivation; heavy metals; organochlorinated compounds. INTRODUÇÃOPor ser uma componente fundamental à existência da vida no planeta, a preocupação com a conservação da qualidade da água e dos seus mananciais tornou-se maior nos últimos anos e a procura de mecanismos eficazes capazes de reduzir os impactos ambientais nesses sistemas tem sido considerada com uma das prioridades de pesquisa desse século 1 . No estado de São Paulo, a cultura de cana-de-açúcar tem se expandido significativamente nos últimos anos, sendo este o maior produtor nacional, com uma produção anual de 200.10 6 t em uma área de 2,5. 10 6 ha. A aplicação e o uso de herbicidas, pesticidas e fertilizantes durante os diferentes estágios de cultivo da cana-deaçúcar, aliados ao problema da devastação das matas ciliares, tem acarretado em diferentes graus, impactos sobre os recursos hídricos das áreas adjacentes a essas plantações, sobretudo através do processo de lixiviação do solo de áreas cultivadas com adubos quími-cos e defensivos agrícolas 2-4 . Apesar do benefício decorrente da utilização de herbicidas, pesticidas e fertilizantes para o aumento na produtividade agrí-cola, o problema de intoxicações por defensivos tem preocupado as autoridades, sobretudo pelo fato de que estas ocorrem pela ingestão gradual desses produtos que contaminam a água, o solo e os alimentos 5 . The accumulation of metals in the sediments results in environmental problems and leads to bioaccumulation of metal ions by the aquatic organisms. In the present study, bioaccumulation of the metals ions Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn and Zn in aquatic insects in streams impacted by the sugar cane was evaluated. The results pointed out that the insects were contaminated by the sediment and that the collector organisms as Chironomus species accumulated higher concentration of metals than the predator organisms.

The occurrence of oligochaetes species living on larvae of Odonata is reported for the first time. There were found Nais variabilis (Piguet, 1906) (Oligochaeta: Naididae) and Chaetogaster diastrophus (Gruithuisen, 1828) (Oligochaeta: Naididae) living on Elasmothemis cannacrioides (Calvert, 1906) (Anisoptera: Libellulidae) and on Mnesarete (Cowley, 1934) (Zygoptera: Calopterygidae).

Preliminary survey of genera and species of Baetidae (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) from São Paulo State, with emphasis in the fauna sampled in low order forested stream.Although in Brazil, there has been an increasing number of studies on Baetidae in the last years, until the present study only three nominal species have been reported from the São Paulo State. Tanytarsus obiriciae, spec. nov., a new Tanytarsini from the Neotropics is described based on male and female adults, larvae and pupae. The larvae were found living associated with aquatic macrophytes in ponds and lakes from the Northern Region of São Paulo State, Brazil. Information on larval abundance dynamics and the adults' emergence periods is presented. Tanytarsus obiriciae, spec. nov., nova espécie de Tanytarsini da região Neotropical é descrita com base em todos os estágios, macho e fêmea adultos, pupa e larva. As larvas foram encontradas vivendo associadas a macrófitas aquáticas em lagoas e lagos da região norte do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Informações sobre a dinâmica numérica das larvas e a periodicidade da emergência dos adultos são apresentadas. Palavras

Three new species of Cryptochironomus Kieffer, 1918, C. brasiliensis, C. mantiqueira and C. reshchikovi, are described and figured as male, pupa and larva. Diagnoses for the male, pupa and larva of the genus are emended. The specimens were collected from different water systems in southeast Brazil.

The State of São Paulo is the great banana producer with 1.17 million tons per year. In this area, 33.113 ha are destined to the production of 810.000 tons of banana. The use fertilizers in the banana plant cultivation, in addition with deforestation of riparian vegetation are responsible for impacts on the hydric resources. This work deals with the possible impact of banana activity in the sediments of 10 streams by the study of 7 metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cr and Ni). The results show that there is a higher concentration of metals in streams with banana cultivation than forested streams. Although, with exception of Ni, the values of metals detected are above to the Threshold Effect Level (TEL) and the Probable Effect Level (PEL) for sediments.
