This study aimed assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of women prisoners regarding the use of male and female condoms as a measure prevention of STD/HIV and their relation to sociodemographic and sexual variables. A quantitative, evaluative study type Inquiry Knowledge, Attitude and Practice, involving 155 women prisoners. Data collection was conducted from January to March 2010 in a female prison in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Only 35 women (22,6%) had adequate knowledge about male condoms and 11 (7,1%) about female condoms. Were diagnosed less favorable attitudes during oral sex. The practice proper condom had little occurrence, particularly females. The attitude was associated with the age and age of first sexual intercourse. The proper use of condoms was significantly associated with the history of prostitution. Thus, strategies to promote sexual health in the prison environment should encompass the factors complexity involved in the use of condoms. DESCRIPTORS:Health knowledge, attitudes, practice. CONDICIONANTES SOCIODEMOGRÁFICOS E SEXUAIS DO CONHECIMENTO, ATITUDE E PRÁTICA DE PRESIDIÁRIAS QUANTO AO USO DE PRESERVATIVOSRESUMO: Objetivou-se avaliar o conhecimento, a atitude e a prática de presidiárias quanto ao uso do preservativo masculino e feminino, como medida preventiva às DSTs/HIV e suas relações com aspectos sociodemográficos e sexuais. Pesquisa quantitativa, avaliativa, do tipo Inquérito Conhecimento, Atitude e Prática, envolvendo 155 presidiárias. A coleta de dados realizou-se de janeiro a março de 2010 na penitenciária feminina do Estado do Ceará. Das mulheres investigadas, 35 (22,6%) tinham conhecimento adequado sobre o preservativo masculino e 11 (7,1%) sobre o feminino. As atitudes foram menos favoráveis quanto ao uso no sexo oral. A prática adequada apresentou baixa ocorrência, em especial do preservativo feminino. A atitude associou-se com a idade e a idade da coitarca, enquanto que a prática adequada associou-se com história de prostituição. Conclui-se que as estratégias de promoção da saúde sexual em ambiente prisional devem englobar a complexidade dos aspectos envolvidos no uso dos preservativos. Estudo quantitativo e descritivo, que teve como objetivo verificar o conhecimento de mulheres que fazem sexo com mulheres sobre as formas de transmissão, prevenção e fatores de risco relacionados ao papiloma vírus humano (HPV). Foi realizado com 31 mulheres residentes no Município de São José do Rio Preto, Estado de São Paulo. Os dados foram coletados por meio de questionário estruturado com 17 questões, analisados com auxílio do programa estatístico Statistical Package of Social Sciences e estatística descritiva. Constatou-se que a média de idade das mulheres foi de 39,5 anos, e que 52% possuíam entre 9 e 11 anos de estudo. Em relação ao conhecimento, 68% das mulheres não sabiam o significado do HPV, 58% acreditavam que a camisinha protege totalmente, e 45% responderam que o Papanicolau deve ser realizado duas vezes ao ano. Concluiu-se que há vulnerabilidade para contaminação por HPV devido à exposição aos fatores de risco e falta de conhecimento.

Objective: Assessing the adequacy of knowledge, attitude and practice of women regarding male and female condoms as STI/HIV preventive measures. Method: An evaluative Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) household survey with a quantitative approach, involving 300 women. Data collection took place between June and August 2013, in an informal urban settlement within the municipality of João Pessoa, Paraiba, Northeast Brazil. Results: Regarding the male condom, most women showed inadequate knowledge and practice, and an adequate attitude. Regarding the female condom, knowledge, attitude and practice variables were unsatisfactory. Significant associations between knowledge/religious orientation and attitude/education regarding the male condom were observed. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary team should be committed to the development of educational practices as care promotion tools in order to improve adherence of condom use. DESCRIPTORS INTRODUCTIONGiven the feminization of the HIV epidemiological profile, issues related to women's sexuality has attracted increasing attention, stressing the responsibility of users, managers and health professionals in controlling the epidemic. According to the World Health Organization, the lack of protection in sexual intercourse constitutes a significant risk factor for the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV worldwide, making condom use an essential element in reducing contamination cycles (1) . In general, women experience obstacles in using condoms, whether it is the female condom by having difficulty in handling, unavailability or access, or the male condom, usually because its use depends on the partner. In this sense, a study conducted with 80 African-American men in attempt to evaluate their response upon request for condom use concluded that issues such as masculinity/chauvinism need to be addressed with heterosexual men, in order to facilitate negotiation between sexual partners (2) . The relationship dynamics play an important role in STI contamination cycles, as some women cannot insist on condom use for various reasons, such as trusting her partner, fear of abandonment or sexual coercion caused by strong persuasion (3) . Gender relations become a determining factor for women with low sexual negotiation power on condom use, making them more vulnerable to HIV exposure (4) . In relation to single women, research has identified that this pattern of submission is no different; for those who seek serious commitment, they liked having unprotected sex with the same men with whom they had extended sexually-affective bonds (5) . In addition to gender issues, other factors are also associated with not using condoms, such as low socioeconomic and cultural levels (6) .
