The lack of information regarding the water requirement of tree species results in water waste in the seedlings production in nurseries. Water requirement, the growth plant factors and water efficiencies for height and diameter were determined for Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake, Cytharexylum myrianthum Cham. and Ceiba speciosa Ravenna seedlings, under automated irrigation management and greenhouse conditions, located at 22 o 45’53” S and 43 o 41’50” W. We used sewage sludge biosolids as substrate in the seedling phase (280 cm -3 tube), and sandy soil material in the initial pot growth phase (18 dm -3 pot). In the seedlings phase, four water replacement levels were applied to the substrate, by drip irrigation, corresponding to average replacement ranging from 40 (V1) to 100% (V4) of the species water requirement. Seedlings developed properly and 80 days after emergence, S . parahyba , C . myrianthum and C . speciosa seedlings received, respectively, 2.40, 1.08 and 0.85 L per plant, for V4. After growth phase (230 DAE), the total water volumes were, respectively, 70.0, 50.3 and 52.7 L per plant. Under adequate water supply, there were rapid recovery and growth of the species, even for the seedlings which showed different height and diameter in the tube phase. The growth plant factors values found were below 0.5 for all species indicating low sensitivity to growth, both in height and in diameter, in response to water deficit. Water efficiency indicators point to distinct trends between the two phases, and C . speciosa has higher values of water efficiencies for height (80.7 and 17.0 cm L -1 ) and diameter (2.1 and 0.5 mm L -1 ) in both phases.

The growth of Eucalyptus pellita in forestry plantations requires attention to water requirements, especially in the initial growth phase from seedling to field-ready plant. In this study, actual evapotranspiration (ETa), crop coefficient (Kc), and the irrigation requirement of E. pellita were assessed during the nursery growth phase (day 40–142). The experimental set-up included lysimeters with different treatments in terms of plants, drainage, and soil conditions. Plant growth and water balance were monitored during June September 2018 in an open nursery area in Riau, Indonesia. ETa was determined by the water balance lysimeter method and potential (reference) evapotranspiration (ETo) was extracted based on the Penman-Monteith method (FAO/56). The results showed that the average Kc value for E. pellita at age 40–142 days is 0.79, which exceeds that reported for E. grandis. The recommended irrigation requirement varies depending on precipitation, from 70 mL/plant/day with no rainfall to zero at precipitation of >30 mm/day. This is the first study to assess water use in E. pellita growing in pots during the nursery phase, which provides guidance on irrigation requirements during their initial growth phase.

Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de retardantes de fogo de curta duração e de um polímero hidrorretentor sobre a emergência e crescimento inicial de Handroanthus ochraceus e Tabebuia roseoalba, em condições de ambiente protegido. Foram realizadas aplicações via substrato na semeadura e com intervalos quinzenais, dos seguintes retardantes de fogo e concentrações: Phos-Chek WD881® (0; 3,00; 6,00; 8,00; 10,00 mL L-1), Hold Fire® (0; 7,00; 9,00; 12,00; 15,00 mL L-1), e polímero hidrorretentor Nutrigel® (0, 0,25; 0,50; 0,75; 1,00 g L-1), em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 10 repetições por tratamento. Nas concentrações iguais a 0, utilizou-se apenas água. A emergência das plântulas foi avaliada por meio do índice de velocidade de emergência, porcentagem e tempo médio de emergência. Realizaram-se análises de crescimento destrutivas aos 30, 45, 60, 90 e 120 dias após a semeadura (DAS), enquanto as análises de fluorescência da clorofila a foram realizadas em três plantas por tratamento, a partir de 60 DAS. As concentrações testadas de Phos-Chek WD881, Hold Fire e Nutrigel não influenciaram na emergência das plântulas das espécies Handroanthus ochraceus e Tabebuia roseoalba. Aplicações de Phos-Chek WD881 até 5,00mL L-1 propiciam efeitos positivos sobre o crescimento das duas espécies. Concentrações de Hold Fire até 8,00 mL L-1 favorecem o crescimento inicial de Tabebuia roseoalba. O crescimento em diâmetro de Handroanthus ochraceus apresenta resposta positiva a partir de 9,60 mL L-1 quando submetido ao retardante Hold Fire. O intervalo de 0,50 g L-1 a 0,88 g L-1do polímero hidrorretentor Nutrigel promove o crescimento em diâmetro das duas espécies. A fluorescência da clorofila a indica que ocorreu pleno funcionamento da etapa fotoquímica no processo fotossintético de Handroanthus ochraceus e Tabebuia roseoalba na presença dos retardantes de fogo e do polímero hidroretentor.
