Quedas com necessidade de procura de serviços de saúde entre idosos: uma análise da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde, 2013

Abstract: The aim was to analyze the prevalence of falls requiring visits to health services and associated sociodemographic factors in the elderly in the Brazilian National Health Survey (PNS), 2013. This was a cross-sectional population-based study using data on 23,815 elderly Brazilians from the PNS 2013 survey. The outcome variable was falls requiring use of a health service. Crude and adjusted analyses were performed with robust Poisson regression, with prevalence ratio as the measure of effect and the respective 9… Show more

“…On the other hand, this result is justified by observing that the elderly who did not suffer fractures of upper limbs had at least one hip or femur fracture, which presented lower FIM values. This finding is consistent with the literature, confirming hip and femur fractures as the main lesions resulting from falls and causing dependence (4,20) .…”

“…A recent national study has found that 41% of hospitalizations due to external causes in public hospitals were due to falls; and of these the hospitalization coefficient revealed that most of the victims were people over 60 years of age (3) . A population-based survey also found that in Brazil the prevalence of falls in the elderly with a need to seek health services was 7.8% (4) .…”

“…The occurrence of falls is a prevalent event among the elderly population and has been the target of different loco-regional and national studies [1][2][3] . The National Health Survey (NHS) 2013, one of the largest epidemiological surveys in Brazil, showed a prevalence of falls of 7.8% in Brazilian population, with a homogeneous distribution among the regions 4 . The analysis of the occurrence by the Brazilian administrative regions confirms the discrepancy of values between North and Midwest (8.5%) and Southeast (7.3%).…”

“…The analysis of the occurrence by the Brazilian administrative regions confirms the discrepancy of values between North and Midwest (8.5%) and Southeast (7.3%). Between states, there is a variation from 5.36 (Rondônia) to 11.3% (Sergipe) 4 . In Spain, the study by Molinero et al showed a prevalence of falls of 13.9% 5 , and in Canada, the value is 5.8%, according to the study by Chang and Do (2015) 6 , similar to Brazilian values.…”

“…Nonetheless, the researchers’ investment in the development of fall prevention technologies is understood, since it is a global public health problem that has a direct impact on the health sector 33 . In Spain, 13.9% of the elderly who suffered a fall had to seek health care 34 ; in Canada, this prevalence was 5.8% 35 , and in Brazil, 7.8% 36 . The magnitude of this problem goes beyond its frequency, as the consequences can lead to functional disability.…”
