Functional materials with wettability of specific surfaces are important for many areas. Here, a new lubricant‐infused elastic inverse opal is presented with tunable and visually “self‐reporting” surface wettability. The elastic inverse opal films are used to lock in the infused lubricating fluid and construct slippery surfaces to repel droplets of various liquids. The films are stretchable, and the lubricating fluid can penetrate the pores under stretching, leaving the surface layer free of lubrication; the resultant undulating morphology of the inverse opal scaffold topography can reversibly pin droplets on the fluidic film rather than the solid substrate. This mechanical stimulation process provides an effective means of dynamically tuning the surface wettability and the optical transparency of the inverse opal films. In particular, as the adjustments are accompanied by simultaneous deformation of the periodic macroporous structure, the inverse opal films can self‐report on their surface status through visible structural color changes. These features make such slippery structural color materials highly versatile for use in diverse applications.

BackgroundThe composition of the intestinal microbiota and its effect on septic shock patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) is unknown. In the present study we explored the hypothesis that bacterial diversity is decreased in septic shock patients and that this diversity may be improved by use of probiotics or enteral nutrition.Material/MethodsA total of 15 stool samples were collected prospectively from septic shock patients in the ICU, while 15 samples from healthy subjects served as controls. Bacterial DNA was submitted for 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The relationship between intestinal microbiota and prognosis was evaluated.ResultsSignificantly lower bacterial diversity was found in septic shock patients compared with healthy subjects (p<0.05). However, there was no difference in bacterial diversity in the presence or absence of probiotics (p=0.59), enteral nutrition (p=0.59), or in-hospital death (p=0.93) in septic shock patients. A high abundance of Proteobacteria and Fusobacteria was observed in most septic shock patients, whereas low abundance was observed in healthy subjects (mean relative proportion: 23.71% vs. 3.53%, p<0.05; 1.27% vs. 0.12%, p=0.59).ConclusionsBacterial diversity was decreased, and 1 or 2 rare bacterial species were overgrown in septic shock patients. Bacterial diversity was not improved by use of probiotics or enteral nutrition. The small sample size of our study limits the interpretation of results.

Limited biomarkers have been identified as prognostic predictors for stage III colon cancer. To combat this shortfall, we developed a computer-aided approach which combing convolutional neural network with machine classifier to predict the prognosis of stage III colon cancer from routinely haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained tissue slides. We trained the model by using 101 cancers from West China Hospital (WCH). The predictive effectivity of the model was validated by using 67 cancers from WCH and 47 cancers from The Cancer Genome Atlas Colon Adenocarcinoma database. The selected model (Gradient Boosting-Colon) provided a hazard ratio (HR) for high- vs. low-risk recurrence of 8.976 (95% confidence interval (CI), 2.824–28.528; P, 0.000), and 10.273 (95% CI, 2.177–48.472; P, 0.003) in the two test groups, from the multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis. It gave a HR value of 10.687(95% CI, 2.908–39.272; P, 0.001) and 5.033 (95% CI,1.792–14.132; P, 0.002) for the poor vs. good prognosis groups. Gradient Boosting-Colon is an independent machine prognostic predictor which allows stratification of stage III colon cancer into high- and low-risk recurrence groups, and poor and good prognosis groups directly from the H&E tissue slides. Our findings could provide crucial information to aid treatment planning during stage III colon cancer.

The present study was designed to develop multifunctional zinc oxide-encapsulated Eudragit FS30D (ZnO/EFS) nanohybrid structures as a biodegradable drug delivery system and as a promising successful carrier for targeting sites. The solvent evaporation method was used to fabricate the ZnO/EFS nanohybrids and the size, shape, stability, and antioxidant activity were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and an antioxidant (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)). Zinc oxide-encapsulated Eudragit FS30D (ZnO/EFS) nanohybrid structures consisted of irregularly shaped, 297.65 nm-sized ZnO/EFS microcapsule, enduring thermal stability from 251.17 to 385.67 °C. Nano-ZnO was encapsulated in EFS through the formation of hydrogen bonds, and the average encapsulation efficiency for nano-ZnO was determined to be 96.12%. In vitro intestinal-targeted drug release assay provided 91.86% with free nano-ZnO, only 9.5% in acidified ZnO/EFS nanohybrid structure but the rate ZnO/EFS nanohybrids reached 93.11% in succus entericus resultantly modified nano-ZnO was proven proficient intestinal-specific delivery system. The stability of the ZnO/EFS nanohybrid structures was confirmed using ζ-potential and antioxidant activity analysis. Hence, the EFS nanoencapsulation strategy of ZnO provided a stable, nontoxic, and pharmacokinetically active intestine-specific system that can become the best choice for an effective oral feed additive in future.

Background: Ischemic stroke is a common disease with poor prognosis, which has become one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is the main bioactive ingredient of Astragali Radix (which has been used for ischemic stroke for thousands of years) and has been found to have multiple bioactivities in the nervous system. In the present study, we aimed to explore the neuroprotective effects of AS-IV in rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (CIR) injury targeting the Sirt1/Mapt pathway.Methods: Sprague–Dawley rats (male, 250–280 g) were randomly divided into the Sham group, middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) group, AS-IV group, MCAO/R + EX527 (SIRT1-specific inhibitor) group, and AS-IV + EX527 group. Each group was further assigned into several subgroups according to ischemic time (6 h, 1 d, 3 d, and 7 days). The CIR injury was induced in MCAO/R group, AS-IV group, MCAO/R + EX527 group, and AS-IV + EX527 group by MCAO surgery in accordance with the modified Zea Longa criteria. Modified Neurological Severity Scores (mNSS) were used to evaluate the neurological deficits; TTC (2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride) staining was used to detect cerebral infarction area; Western Blot was used to assess the protein levels of SIRT1, acetylated MAPT (ac-MAPT), phosphorylated MAPT (p-MAPT), and total MAPT (t-MAPT); Real-time Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was used in the detection of Sirt1 and Mapt transcriptions.Results: Compared with the MCAO/R group, AS-IV can significantly improve the neurological dysfunction (p &lt; 0.05), reduce the infarction area (p &lt; 0.05), raise the expression of SIRT1 (p &lt; 0.05), and alleviate the abnormal hyperacetylation and hyperphosphorylation of MAPT (p &lt; 0.05). While compared with the AS-IV group, AS-IV + EX527 group showed higher mNSS scores (p &lt; 0.05), more severe cerebral infarction (p &lt; 0.05), lower SIRT1 expression (p &lt; 0.01), and higher ac-MAPT and p-MAPT levels (p &lt; 0.05).Conclusion: AS-IV can improve the neurological deficit after CIR injury in rats and reduce the cerebral infarction area, which exerts neuroprotective effects probably through the Sirt1/Mapt pathway.
