The nonlinear optical properties for the PbO, TiO2, K2O, and SiO2 system have been measured by the Z-scan method. The magnitude and sign of the nonlinear refractive index n2 were determined, as was the negative sign, which indicated a self-defocusing optical nonlinearity. Two optical absorption bands at 540 and 660 nm, respectively, are observed in the optical absorption spectra. The sources of the absorption bands are attributed to the 3d-shell electronic transitions of Ti3+ ions from the ground state to the excited states. The origin of the negative nonlinear refractive index was the contribution of resonant electronic transition processes, which can cancel the positive nonresonant refractive index that mainly resulted from the hyperpolarizabilities of the Pb–O and Ti–O pairs.

The authors have prepared heterostructured ZnO∕BiFeO3-PbTiO3 (BFO-PT) composite film and BFO-PT film on Pt∕Ti∕SiO2∕Si substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. The structure and morphologies of the films were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope. XRD results show that both films are perovskite structured last with different orientations. The leakage current density in the ZnO∕BFO-PT film was found to be nearly two orders of magnitude lower. This could be due to the introduced ZnO layer behaving as a Schottky barrier between the BFO-PT film and top electrodes. The dramatic ferroelectric enhancement in ZnO∕BFO-PT film is mostly ascribed to the improved insulation.

Electric polarizations and elastic strain were measured simultaneously for several lead lanthanum zirconate-titanate (PLZT) compositions cycled around their high-field electric hysteresis loops. Using the accepted symbolism for compositions, where the first number gives the mole percent of La203 and the second two numbers give the ratio of PbZr03 to PbTiOa in the composition, data were taken for (7,7.5,8,8.8,9.5)/65/35 and 8/70/30 compositions. The results show that for all compositions in which the base state is macroscopically nonpolar, the strains are dominantly electrostrictive in nature. Both of the polarization-related constants, Qll and Qlz, are almost independent of temperature and of the same order as in other perovskites but decrease slightly in magnitude with increasing LaZO3 content.

Crystalline solutions of 0.57(Bi(1-x)La(x))FeO(3)-0.43PbTiO(3) (BLF-PT) for x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 were fabricated by the traditional solid state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the tetragonal torhombohedral phase transformation of BLF-PT occurred with an increase of the La content. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of BLF-PT were investigated at room temperature for different La contents. BLF-PT revealed strong ferroelectric characteristics for the lower La composition, and transferred to relaxor ferroelectrics for x 0.2. The dielectric constant and remanent polarization were 1461 and 33.5 microC/cm(2), respectively, for BLF-PT of x = 0.2. The dielectric constant and polarization of BLF-PT were enhanced simultaneously with increasing La content. Our results demonstrate that BLF-PT is a competitive piezoelectric ceramic.
