Essential oils of Salvia macrochlamys and Salvia recognita were obtained by hydrodistillation of dried aerial parts and characterized by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. One hundred and twenty identified constituents representing 97.7% in S. macrochlamys and 96.4% in S. recognita were characterized, and 1,8-cineole, borneol, and camphor were identified as major components of the essential oils. The oils were evaluated for their antimalarial, antimicrobial, and antifungal activities. Antifungal activity of the essential oils from both Salvia species was nonselective at inhibiting growth and development of reproductive stroma of the plant pathogens Colletotrichum acutatum, Colletotrichum fragariae, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. S. macrochlamys oil had good antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium intracellulare; however, the oils showed no antimicrobial activity against human pathogenic bacteria or fungi up to a concentration of 200 microg/mL. S. recognita oil exhibited a weak antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum.
This study concerned the taxonomic revision of Astragalus L. section Onobrychoidei DC in Turkey. The morphological, cytological, and phenological characteristics of 29 species in this section are discussed. Moreover, 11 names at specific levels are reduced to synonymy: Astragalus eskishehiricus, A. hololeucoides, A. sakaryaensis, A. phanothrix, A. canescens, A. robertianus, A. rausianus, A. tunceliensis, A. pseudovegetus, A. bingoellensis, and A. bithynicus. The conservation statuses based on the IUCN Red List categories are mentioned for endemic taxa.
Hydro-distilled essential oils from fruits, aerial parts (without fruits) and roots of Pimpinella species native to Turkey and their phylogenetic relationships to one another were examined. Phytochemical investigation of the essential oils of 19 species resulted in isolation of 16 phenylpropanoids, four sesquiterpenes and two azulene-type norsesquiterpenes. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined primarily from 1D-and 2D-NMR experiments as well as liquid chromatography -mass spectrometry and gas chromatography -mass spectrometry. Phylogenetic relationships among 26 species were evaluated using ITS 1, ITS 4 nuclear rDNA and psbA-trnH cpDNA sequences. In this study, significance and occurrence of phenylpropanoids, azulenes and geijerenes are discussed from a phylogenetic, chemical and biosynthetic perspective. The distribution of different classes of compounds and their putative associations with one another as per current knowledge of their biosynthetic pathways indicates that this information, in conjunction with the phylogeny, could provide valuable information regarding the presence and perhaps evolution of the different classes of compounds. Analysis of the phenylpropanoid components indicates that (E)-anethole is an obligatory intermediate of this pathway. The various Pimpinella species differ primarily in their ability to acylate anethole, suggesting that while the pathway leading to anethole is common to this genus, species differ in their enzymatic machinery leading to acylate. The relationship between azulenes and geijerenes is not as intuitive, but all Pimpinella species analysed in this study have the biochemical machinery required to synthesize these chemical classes.
Pollen morphology of 11 species of the genus Oxytropis DC. (Fabaceae) distributed in Turkey were examined with light (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Morphology of pollen grains shows isopolar, radially symmetric, tricolporate, prolate or subprolate, porus shape oblate or operculate and exine subtectate. The size varies with the polar axis from 19.52 -33.31 µm and the equatorial axis from 13.50 -25.82 µm. There are five ornamentation types: perforate at equatorial section and psilate at polar sections, microreticulate at equatorial sections and psilate at polar sections, microreticulate at equatorial sections and perforate at polar sections, microreticulate at both equatorial and polar sections and perforate at both equatorial and polar sections. Pollen aperture, shape and especially different ornamentation patterns at polar and equatorial section of pollen, as found in this study, appear to be important character. The findings of this study indicate the taxonomic implications of pollen morphology in understanding the similarity and relationships in the genus Oxytropis.
