Background and Aim:Indiscriminate and injudicious use of antibiotics in layer farms is a common practice of Bangladesh for the compensation of Poor management practices and ignorance. Despite this scenario, there is no published documentation on antibiotic usage pattern and farm management practices in layer farms. This study was undertaken to understand the farmers’ perspective in small-scale layer farms regarding antibiotics usage and farm management.Materials and Methods:A questionnaire survey was conducted in 120 small-scale layer farms of Mymensingh district during January-February 2017. We only considered farms in production. Data were analyzed on antibiotic usage, purpose, egg management, understanding of antibiotic residue, withdrawal period, and other issues.Results:Among 120 farmers, about 94.16% of farmers are using antibiotics without respecting the withdrawal period. Only 39.1% of farmers possess knowledge of residues. In our surveyed farms, 91.83% of farmers are not practicing egg washing before supplying to the market and 52.67% of farmers are unaware of cleaning and disinfection of egg tray. Ten different types of antibiotics of seven classes have found in the survey. Most antibiotics are in the Watch (49%) and Reserve (8%) groups according to the WHO AWaRe categorization and 73% antibiotics are critically important for human medicine and are considered as last resort.Conclusion:This study found that due to the lack of knowledge and poor management, farmers consider using antibiotics as the most effective practices to control disease and enhancement of egg production. These indiscriminate uses of antibiotics are responsible for antibiotic residual and resistance problem. Here, we also provide some suggestion and guidelines to improve management practices to minimize the emerging problems of antimicrobial resistance through small-scale layer farms.
Objective:To analyze the presence of selective antibiotic residues (oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, and ciprofloxacin) in milk during the antibiotic treatment course, and to evaluate the thermal effect on antibiotics residual status in milk of antibiotic-treated cows.Materials and Methods:The raw fresh milk was collected from 18 lactating cows before antibiotics treatment, which were brought to the veterinary hospital and suffered from either mastitis, foot and mouth disease, fever, local wound, or non-specific diarrhea, and so on. Out of the 18 lactating cows, six were treated with oxytetracycline, six were treated with amoxicillin, and six were treated with ciprofloxacin parenterally. Milk samples were also collected at 2nd day during treatment and final collection was done after maintaining the withdrawal period. Since milk is heated before consumption, it was boiled at 100°C for 20 min to evaluate the thermal effect on antibiotics residual status. Thin-layer chromatography was done for screening of antibiotics residue before and after boiling of the milk.Results:At day 0 (before antibiotic treatment), no antibiotics (oxytetracycline, ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin) residue was detected in raw milk of antibiotic treated cows. In contrast, on day 2 (during antibiotic treatment), 100% raw milk samples showed positive for antibiotics residue. After boiling, all milk samples showed positive for such specific antibiotics residue. On the other hand, no antibiotics residues were detected on day 9, which indicates the completion of the withdrawal period of the respective antibiotic. The intensities of bands for antibiotic on thin-layer chromatography plate of antibiotic residues in milk samples (oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, and ciprofloxacin) expressed that the respective antibiotic residual status was higher in the boiled milk compare to the raw milk.Conclusion:Proper maintenance of withdrawal period after antibiotic treatment would minimize the risk of antibiotic residues in milk, and boiling does not change these specific antibiotics residual status in milk. Therefore, awareness regarding the proper maintenance of withdrawal period after antibiotic treatment in lactating cows is one of the best strategies that may positively reduce the risk of antimicrobial drugs residue in milk.
This study evaluated the effect of ginger on the growth performance, carcass quality of broiler chickens. 20 broiler chickens were randomly selected into two treatment groups identified as T1 and T2 with a positive control and a negative control group. Each treatment contained with five birds. Birds on T1 were treated with 1% ginger extract and T2 was treated with 2% ginger extract via drinking water. Significant variations (p<0.05) existed between the control and other treatments in mean final body weight, dressed weight, daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio. At the end of experiment (35 th day) for 1% ginger extraction treatment the live body weight is 1746gm (p<0.05), dressing weight 1106.4 (p<0.05) and FCR is 1.67(p<0.05). The usage of the test ingredients had a significant effect (p<0.05) on dressing percentage. Supplementation of ginger improves the performance of broilers when added at the rate of 1% of broiler ration and can be a possible alternative to antibiotic growth promoter in the feeding of broiler chicken.
Rabies is endemic in Bangladesh. To identify risk factors, a case-control study was conducted based on hospital-reported rabid animal bite (RAB) cases in domestic ruminants, 20092018. RAB cases (n=449) and three controls per case were selected. Dogs (87.8%) and jackals (12.2%) were most often identified as the biting animals. In the final multivariable model, the risk of being a RAB case was significantly higher in cattle aged >0.5 to 2 years (OR 2.89; 95% CI: 1.56-5.37), >2 to 5 years (OR 3.63; 95% CI: 1.97-6.67) and >5 years (OR 6.42; 95% CI: 3.39-12.17) compared to those aged <0.5 years. Crossbred cattle were at higher risk of being a RAB case (OR 5.48; 95% CI: 3.56-8.42) than indigenous. Similarly, female cattle were more likely to be a RAB case (OR 1.26; 95% CI: 1.15-2.29) than males. Cattle in rural areas (OR 39.48; 95% CI: 6.14-254.00) were at much higher risk of being RAB cases than those in urban areas. Female, crossbred and older cattle especially in rural areas should either be managed indoors during the dog breeding season (SeptemberOctober) or vaccinated. A national rabies elimination program should prioritise rural dogs for mass vaccination. Jackals should also be immunized using oral bait vaccines. Prevention of rabies in rural dogs and jackals would also reduce rabies incidence in humans.
p-coumaric acid, commonly referred to as 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, is a phenolic acid, which has been subjected to much research in recognition of its beneficial properties against several diseases and its widespread distribution in the plant kingdom. This compound can be found in the free-state or coupled with other molecules in nature. It has demonstrated prospective pharmacological effects including antiproliferative, nephroprotective, neuroprotective, antioxidant and antimicrobial effects in addition to other biological properties through numerous in vivo, in vitro and clinical studies. This review reported a short summary on p-coumaric acid to provide fundamental information in its biosynthesis, plant sources, and pharmacological effects which may help in future research and development of novel therapeutics. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics in broiler could lead to residue accumulation in food chain. We conducted a study to detect colistin residues in broiler meat in different growth stages, collected from different upazilas of Mymensingh division. A total of 108 samples, were collected from Fulbaria, Mymensingh Sadar, and Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh district and Nakla Upazila of Sherpur district. From each farm, nine samples were collected at the three different growth stages: 14-20 days (Early:E), 21-27 (Middle:M) days and 28-35 (Late:L) days, respectively. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) was used for the qualitative detection colistin residues in broiler meat. A questionnaire survey was carried out with the farmers from whom the samples were collected. Most of the farmers’ had varying degree of knowledge about biosecurity, withdrawal period and residue of antibiotic, and academic qualification varies from primary to graduate level. Out of 108 samples, 50% (18 out of 36) samples were positive for TLC in early samples, whereas 66.67% (24 out of 36) samples for middle and 50% (18 out of 36) for late collected samples. Upazila-wise, the highest concentration was detected in Mymensingh sadar and Nakla (66.67%) and lowest in Fulbaria (33.33%). These result indicates that colistin are being misused in poultry industry especially in middle days of broiler life and withdrawal periods are not maintained when broiler are marketed.
