The results suggest that neuromuscular electrical stimulation combined with thermal-tactile stimulation is a better treatment for patients with swallowing disorders after stroke than thermal-tactile stimulation alone.
This study suggests that the CO-OP approach is beneficial effects on the occupational performance to improvement in individuals with hemiparetic stroke, and have positive effects on generalization and transfer of acquired skills.
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between daily
activities and manual dexterity in persons with Parkinson disease. [Subjects and Methods]
The study participants were 25 patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease. This study used
two clinical tools, the box-and-block test and Schwab and England Activities of Daily
Living scale, to investigate the relationship between manual dexterity and Schwab and
England Activities of Daily Living score. [Results] A positive correlation was observed
between the Schwab and England Activities of Daily Living and the box-and-block test
scores on the more and less affected sides. Moreover, the Schwab and England Activities of
Daily Living score had a greater correlation with the box-and-block test score on the less
affected side than that on the more affected side. [Conclusion] Manual dexterity and
activities of daily living showed a positive correlation in individuals with Parkinson
disease. The results of this study suggest that manual dexterity is an important factor
for predicting physical performance in daily living in persons with Parkinson disease.
In children with spastic CP, 3 factors of the WeeFIM were determined by factor analysis. Therefore, self-care, motor, and cognitive domains should be treated as separate scales in children with spastic CP.
[Purpose] The purpose of this research was two-fold: (1) to evaluate the effects of
father’s parenting participation on parenting stress among mothers with disabled children
and (2) more specifically, to investigate the importance of fathers’ parenting
participation in decreasing mothers’ parenting stress. [Subjects and Methods] To examine
these relationships, this study recruited 82 mothers with disabled children from
rehabilitation centers in the Gwangju city. The common characteristics of parents and
children, father’s parenting participation, and mother’s parenting stress were assessed
using standard questionnaires. [Results] Based on mother reports, findings suggest that as
fathers’ parenting participation increases mothers’ parenting stress decreases.
[Conclusion] The present study reveals a need for improvement in parenting education and
in providing fathers of disabled children with a temporary leave of absence from work.
Specifically, this research highlights the importance of shared parenting responsibilities
among family members. Finally, our findings suggest that developing a standardized
national program for assisting parents with disabled children may help decrease parenting
stress in mothers.
BackgroundThe evaluation of children with cerebral palsy (CP) focuses on activity level measurement to examine the effect of health-care interventions on their physical functioning in the home, school, and community settings. This study aimed to identify the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) by applying the Rasch model. The use of the Rasch model has an advantage in that item characteristic curve estimation is not affected by the characteristics of subject groups.MethodsData were collected from 65 children with CP aged 75–190 months using the Korean version of the CHAQ. Response data were analyzed according to the Rasch model, and item fitness and difficulty and the appropriateness and reliability of the rating scale were evaluated.ResultsAmong the 30 items of the Korean version of the CHAQ, two items (nail-cutting and opening a bottle cap that was already opened) were shown to be misfit items with low fitness. The analysis results for item difficulty indicated the requirement for modification of item difficulty, pointing out the need for the addition of question items with both higher and lower difficulty. The use of 4-point rating scale in the evaluation questionnaire was shown to be appropriate. With respect to analysis outcomes, the subjects’ separation reliability value and separation index were 0.97 and 5.92, respectively. In contrast, the separation reliability value and separation index for the question items were 0.95 and 4.51, respectively.ConclusionsThe results of this study suggest the need for the modification of item fitness and difficulty. The psychometric properties of the Korean version of the CHAQ were identified using the item response theory-based Rasch analysis.
[Purpose] This study attempted to investigate the sensitivity and specificity of the
Falls Efficacy Scale (FES) and the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC) for
community residents with hemiplegic stroke. [Subjects and Methods] The FES and the ABC
data were collected for a sample of 99 community-dwelling hemiplegic stroke patients in
Korea. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the cut-off
values, and the area under the curve (AUC) was used to assess the overall accuracy of each
balance test. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to identify the
predictors of falling. [Results] The cut-off value was 63.75 in the ABC and 66.50 in the
FES. The sensitivity and specificity of the ABC was 41.3% and 92.0%, respectively. The
sensitivity and specificity of the FES was 69.8% and 63.9%, respectively. The AUC was
0.691 for the ABC and 0.678 for the FES. The ABC explained 28.0% of the variance in the
experience of falls. [Conclusion] The ABC has the ability to determine non-fallers, and it
was a good explanatory factor of experience of falls.
BackgroundAlthough activity and participation are the target domains in stroke rehabilitation interventions, there is insufficient evidence available regarding the validity of participation measurement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the London Handicap Scale in community-dwelling stroke patients, using Rasch analysis.MethodsParticipants were 170 community-dwelling stroke survivors. The data were analyzed using Winsteps (version 3.62) with the Rasch model to determine the unidimensionality of item fit, the distribution of item difficulty, and the reliability and suitability of the rating process for the London Handicap Scale.ResultsData of 16 participants did not fit the Rasch model and there were no misfitting items. The person separation value was 2.42, and the reliability was .85; furthermore, the rating process for the London Handicap Scale was found to be suitable for use with stroke patients.ConclusionsThis was the first trial to investigate the psychometric properties of the London Handicap Scale using Rasch analysis; the results supported the suitability of this scale for use with stroke patients.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
