This research explains how tradition can be modified for tourism and political purposes. The tradition that will be elaborated in this essay is "Festival 1000 Tumpeng Kelud". This festival adapts tradional Javanese cultural ceremony. The commodification of tradition is associated with the development of tourism in the area of Kelud Mountain, East Java. Furthermore, tourims activity in Kelud Mountain is part of strategy to defend particular territory in a disputed area. This is ethnography research with qualitative data and descriptive analysis, located in Sugihwaras village. Key informants of this research are special figure in society whom considered as person who can communicate with Kelud Mountain, society representative, BMKG officers, and Village officials. This essay concludes that there are three layers purposes of convening "Festival 1000 Tumpeng" initiated by the government of Kediri namely preservation of traditions and gratitude expression to God, tourism promotion, and politics of territoriality related to disputed area with Blitar Regency.

Bangsa Indonesia adalah bangsa yang sangat dekat dengan keberagaman. Terdiri dari kurang lebih 1.300 suku bangsa yang tersebar dari Sabang hingga Merauke, setiap suku tersebut memilki budaya, bahasa, dan cara hidup yang berbeda-beda, bahkan dapat juga menganut sistem kepercayaan atau agama tersendiri. Terbukti, dengan kekayaan perbedaan tersebut, Indonesia dapat berdiri sebagai bangsa dan negara yang merdeka. Namun, sejak 2005 kita dihadapi pada fenomena baru, yakni meningkatnya kasus intoleransi dan radikalisme yang mengatasnamakan isu primordial, seperti agama dan etnis. Mudah saja jika kita mengasumsikan bahwa konflik semata terjadi karena kesalahpahaman antarkelompok semata, atau sebagai akibat dari kesenjangan ekonomi yang menimbulkan kecemburuan sosial. Padahal, yang sebenarnya terjadi tidak lah sesederhana itu. Buku bungai rampai ini akan menelusuri serta menguak kasus-kasus intoleransi dan radikalisme yang terjadi di berbagai wilayah di Indonesia. Data terkini yang telah dikumpulkan melalui observasi mendetail di lapangan serta wawancara eksklusif dengan narasumber yang kompeten akan dianalisis dengan metode ilmiah untuk menghasikan suatu temuan dan kesimpulan yang berkualitas. Dengan demikian, diharapkan buku bunga rampai ini dapat menjadi katalis bagi para pembacanya untuk dapat membangun kehidupan yang lebih positif dalam bingkai keindonesiaan di lingkungan masing-masing.

Indonesia is confronting an intensifying threat of ecological disaster due to excessive natural resource exploitation and environmental damage. Existing tools to evaluate local government performance are unable to critically assess many key aspects of natural resource and environmental management. The results of these formal performance assessments do not reflect the reality in local communities. We argue that this gap is caused by more than just inaccurate reporting; the gap between reality and assessment results is because official assessment approaches sideline the consideration of state–society relations and socio-political dimensions. The assessments reduce natural resource management and environmental protection in Indonesia to techno-managerial terms that reflect a post-politicizing of the environment, as outlined in Erik Swyngedouw’s critical social science literature. In this chapter, we look specifically at the content and application of these local government environmental performance assessment tools. While they may appear to cover key points of environmental good governance, their technocratic mode character is disguising politico-business linkages and oligarchical interests that damage the environment. Environmental crisis, social conflict, and democratic regression are consequently on the increase in Indonesia.
