A general model of affective aggression was used to generate predictions concerning hot temperatures. Experiment 1 examined hot temperature effects on hostile affect, hostile cognition, perceived arousal, and physiological arousal in the context of a study of video games. Experiment 2 examined hot temperature effects on hostile affect, perceived and physiological arousal, and general positive and negative affect in the context of brief aerobic exercise. Consistent results were obtained. Hot temperatures produced increases in hostile affect, hostile cognition, and physiological arousal. Hot temperatures also produced decreases in perceived arousal and general positive affect. These results suggest that hot temperatures may increase aggressive tendencies via any of three separate routes. Hostile affect, hostile cognitions, and excitation transfer processes may all increase the likelihood of biased appraisals of ambiguous social events, biased in a hostile direction.

A general framework for studying affective aggression, integrating many insights from previous models (e.g., those of Baron, Berkowitz, Geen, and Zillmann), is presented. New research examining effects of extreme temperatures and photos of guns on arousal, cognition, and affect is reported. Hostile cognition was assessed using an automatic priming task (i.e., Stroop interference). Hostile affect was assessed with the State Hostility Scale. Positive and negative affect, hostile attitudes, perceived comfort, and perceived arousal were also assessed. As expected, hot and cold temperatures increased state hostility and hostile attitudes, and viewing guns did not. As expected, viewing guns primed hostile cognitions and extreme temperatures did not. Theoretical implications of these results and societal implications of the general framework are discussed.

Early surgery in severely injured patients with thoracolumbar spine trauma was associated with fewer complications and shorter hospital and intensive care unit lengths of stay, required less ventilator support for noninfectious reasons, and did not increase neurologic deficits.

A recent model of affective aggression [Anderson et al., 1996] proposes that individual differences and situational factors can affect aggressive behavior through cognitive, affective, and arousal pathways. An experiment tested the relations of trait hostility and physical pain to aggressive thoughts (the cognitive path) and state hostility (the affective path). The experiment found an interaction between pain and trait hostility on aggressive thoughts. Trait hostile participants who experienced pain rated ambiguous words (e.g., alley) as more similar to aggressive words (e.g., hit) than did the other groups. State hostility was positively related to trait hostility and was increased by the experience of pain. These results demonstrate the heuristic utility of the Anderson et al. Model. Aggr. Given the lack of objective physical measures for assessing fibromyalgia syndrome (FS), the role of pain assessment is particularly important. The role of psychological factors is controversial among FS patients. This study was designed to better understand the relationship between pain behaviors and psychological variables. Specifically, this study (1) refined a pain behavior observation (PBO) methodology for use with FS patients, (2) determined whether stretching is a valid pain behavior, and (3) assessed whether psychological variables including self-efficacy and/or depression can predict pain behaviors after controlling for disease severity and age. The 73 FS subjects meeting the American College of Rheumatology classification system completed questionnaires measuring self-efficacy, depression, and pain. Trained physicians conducted tender-point examinations. Subjects were video-taped using a standardized procedure. Two trained raters independently coded all pain behaviors. Kappa coefficients and correlations among pain behaviors and self-reported pain indicated that the PBO method was both reliable and valid. However, the newly defined pain behavior 'stretching' was found to be negatively associated with self-reported pain. Hierarchical multiple regression (MR) analyses revealed that depression did not predict pain behavior over and above myalgic scores and age; however, in 3 separate MR analyses, self-efficacy for function, pain, and other symptoms each predicted pain behavior over and above myalgic scores and age. This study indicated that the original pain behavior scoring methodology is appropriate for use with the FS population and should not be modified to include the pain behavior 'stretching'. Self-efficacy was related to pain behavior while depression was not among this FS sample.

Frequent hypokalemia was noted immediately after trauma, and it was hypothesized that hypokalemia occurred more frequently in the more severely injured. A retrospective trauma registry and chart review was done on 546 trauma patients looking at admission potassium, a variety of lab tests related to potassium, specific injuries, hospital/ICU lengths of stay, and general patient demographics. Admission hypokalemia (K < 3.6 meq/l) was more frequent in those with closed head injuries (41.1% vs. 27.5%, P < .001) and in those who suffered spinal cord injuries (54.5% vs. 33.6%, P < .05). Hyperglycemia was more frequent with admission hypokalemia (45.2% vs. 29.7%, P < .001). Hypokalemia occurred more frequently in younger patients (28.6 vs. 37.7 y, P < .001). Also, the pediatric group, ages 5-14, had admission hypokalemia more frequently than those ages 15-59, or those ages > 59 (54.9% vs. 34.5% vs. 16.7%, P < .001). Glasgow Coma Scores (GCS) were significantly lower (12.0 vs. 13.5, P < .001) and Injury Severity Scores (ISS) were higher (17.4 vs. 13.4, P < .001), with admission hypokalemia. Additionally, hypokalemia was a positive predictor of ISS (P = .05). Hypokalemic patients more likely needed a ventilator, (26.6% vs. 16.5%, P < .01) but did not have significantly more ventilator days (P > .05). Subsequently, hypokalemic patients had longer ICU lengths of stay (LOS) (2.6 vs. 1.5 days, P < .005) and longer hospital LOS (8.5 vs. 5.6 days, P < .001). When stratified into categories of "severe": (K < 3.1 meq/l), "moderate": (K = 3.1-3.3 meq/l), and "mild": (K = 3.4-3.5 meq/l) hypokalemia, those with severe hypokalemia had significantly lower GCS (10.0 vs. 13.1, p < .05), higher serum glucose levels (167 vs. 137 mg/dl, P < .05), lower creatinine levels (.77 vs. .95 mg/dl, P < .05), and longer hospital lengths of stay (13.1 days vs. 7.6 days, P < .05 results).
