A ema (Rhea americana) é uma ave sul-americana do grupo das ratitas, da ordem Rheiforme, freqüentemente explorada com fins econômicos, como pecuária alternativa em países europeus e sul-americanos. No Brasil, destaca-se o Rio Grande do Sul e, em fase inicial, o Nordeste. O presente estudo objetivou descrever a morfologia das células sangüíneas em ema. Neste trabalho foram utilizados dez exemplares, desconsiderando-se idade e sexo. Foram colhidos 3mL de sangue periférico por punção da veia braquial, com seringa descartável. As amostras foram utilizadas, em parte, na confecção de extensões coradas com Leishman. Feita a análise morfológica ao Microscópio de Luz, foram observados sete tipos celulares nucleados. O eritrócito mostrou-se elíptico, com núcleo geralmente condensado, de forma elíptica; citoplasma acidófilo. O trombócito apresentou-se elíptico, com núcleo localizado em um dos pólos; citoplasma pálido. Quanto aos leucócitos, de forma arredondada, entre os granulócitos os heterófilos apresentaram-se com núcleo excêntrico, condensado, lobulado; citoplasma rico em grânulos fusiformes de coloração salmão. Os eosinófilos distinguem-se dos heterófilos pelos grânulos arredondados eosinofílicos. Os basófilos destacam-se dos outros granulócitos pelo núcleo grande e central, com grânulos citoplasmáticos específicos arredondados e fortemente basofílicos. Entre os agranulócitos, os monócitos mostraram núcleo rineforme, freqüentemente central, de cromatina frouxa, com pequenas áreas de condensação; citoplasma levemente basofílico e com vacúolos. Os linfócitos apresentaram-se variados em forma e tamanho; núcleo grande com cromatina frouxa, com alguns nucléolos; citoplasma escasso e basofílico. As células do sangue periférico de Rhea americana apresentam ao Microscópio de Luz morfologia semelhante às demais aves já estudadas.

ResumoIntrodução: Variações no desenvolvimento dentário podem implicar em alterações no número de dentes, como, por exemplo, a hiperdontia, que é caracterizada pela formação de dentes em excesso, que são chamados de supranumerários. Sua ocorrência está frequentemente associada a patologias e interferências na erupção dos dentes permanentes, que podem comprometer a estética e a oclusão. Portanto, é importante descrever seu perfil epidemiológico. Objetivo: Este estudo objetivou analisar dados epidemiológicos, em prontuários, avaliando a prevalência dos dentes supranumerários. Material e método: A amostra constituiu-se de 1511 prontuários de pacientes atendidos no Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal do Piauí, entre janeiro de 2006 e janeiro de 2011, observando-se a prevalência dos dentes supranumerários segundo número de pacientes, gênero, faixa etária, cor da pele, localização, posição no arco dentário, tipo e tratamento. Resultado: A prevalência dos dentes supranumerários foi de 1,99%, ocorrendo em pacientes de cor parda (78,57%), com dentição permanente (86,96%), do gênero masculino (53,33%), localizados em região posterior de maxila (35%) e mandíbula (35%), e do tipo paramolar (38,10%). A maioria das cirurgias foi realizada por indicação ortodôntica (62,96% dos casos). Conclusão: De acordo com os resultados, a presença de dentes supranumerários foi um achado incomum com predominância pela maxila, sendo o tipo paramolar o mais frequente. Todos os casos foram tratados por remoção cirúrgica, sendo a maioria por indicação ortodôntica.Descritores: Dente supranumerário; prevalência; epidemiologia. AbstractIntroduction: Variations in tooth development may result in changes in the number of teeth, for example, hyperdontia, which is characterized by the formation of teeth in excess, that is called supernumerary. Its occurrence is frequently associated to pathologies and interferences in the eruption of permanent teeth which can implicate the esthetics and occlusion. So, it is important to describe its epidemiological profile. Objective: This study aimed to analyze epidemiological data in medical records, assessing the prevalence of supernumerary teeth. Material and method: The sample consisted in 1511 records of patients treated at the Hospital of Federal University of Piauí, between January 2006 and January 2011, noting the prevalence of supernumerary teeth in number of patients, gender, age, ethnicity, location, position in the dental arch, type and treatment. Result: The prevalence of supernumerary teeth was 1.99%, occurring in patients of mixed ethnicity (78.57%), with permanent dentition (86,96%), male (53.33%), located in the posterior maxilla (35%) and mandible (35%), and the paramolar type (38,10%). The majority of the surgeries were performed by indication orthodontic (62.96% of cases). The ceramic crowns cemented onto the customized zirconia abutments offered greater fracture resistance than ceramic crowns with customized zirconia abutments screw retained onto implants. The cyclic fatigue did not seem to influence the fracture resistance of these crowns, whether cemented or screw retained onto implants. Fracture of the veneering ceramic was the predominant failure in this study.

Ameloblastoma is a true neoplasm of odontogenic epithelial origin. It is a slow-growing benign tumor of the jaw, and patients usually present late after the tumor achieves considerable size to cause facial disfigurement. Diagnosis mainly from tissue biopsy and radiograph findings does assist in differentiating between types of ameloblastoma. Unicystic ameloblastoma is a tumor with a strong propensity for recurrence. There is a difference in biological behavior between mural unicystic ameloblastoma and those which are simply cystic or show intraluminal proliferation. The challenges in the management of this tumor are to provide complete excision in addition to reconstructing the bony defect, to provide the patient with reasonable cosmetic and functional outcome. The authors report a case of a mural unicystic ameloblastoma in a 23-year-old man who was treated by partial resection of the mandible. Biomedical prototypes were used because they provide acceptable precision and are useful for treatment planning.

Bone fractures to be corrected need stabilization of their extremities, which is achieved with the use of plates and screws. This research aimed to produce castor bean polyurethane (Ricinus communis), to make resorbable plate, structural and thermal analysis. The production was made by the glycerolysis of the triglycerides present in the oil, after addition of polyol/glycerol and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) to form urethane structures, with and without addition of hydroxyapatite. The characterization was by FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. Plates with dimensions of 40 mm X 10 mm X 2 mm were obtained. The SEM showed flat and homogeneous surface. DRX analysis showed the semi-crystallinity of the biomaterial. Glass transition and thermal stability up to 50 °C were observed, followed by thermal decomposition up to 450 °C. The produced polyurethane showed it is possible to be applied in the manufacture of plate.

The screwed fixed prostheses caused less stress on peri-implant bone regardless of whether the cantilever was located mesially or distally.
