Objective: This work aimed to investigate the lipid constituents and flavonoidal compounds of Satureja montana, in addition to evaluation of different extracts and/or isolated compounds as antimicrobials and antioxidants.Methods: The volatile and lipid constituents were extracted with n-hexane by partition from hydroalcoholic extract of S. montana L. aerial parts, after then were fractionated to unsaponifiable matters and fatty acid methyl esters which were identified by gas–liquid chromatography and/or gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The phenolic constituents were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of the aqueous methanolic extract of the aerial parts of the plant. The antimicrobial activity of different extracts and the isolated compounds was evaluated against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungus using a modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.Results: The identified compounds are luteolin-7-rhamnoside-4’-O-β-glucopyranoside (1), quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (2), quercetin- 7-O-glucopyranoside (3), luteolin-7-O-glucopyranoside (4), 5-hydroxy-6,7,8,4’-tetramethoxy flavone (5), gallic acid (6), 2,3-hexahydroxydiphenoyl 1-galloyl glucopyranoside (7), and quercetin (8). The structure of all isolated compounds was established using different chromatographic and spectroscopic measurements (PC, thin-layer chromatography, ultraviolet [UV], 1D, 2D-nuclear magnetic resonance, and MS). Compound-2 showed the highest antibacterial activity against all the tested microorganisms. Hydroalcoholic extract exhibited high antioxidant activity (87.7%). On the other hand, hexane fraction showed a low antioxidant activity (46.4%), in addition to the compound-8 showed the highest antioxidant activity (96.27%) in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay.Conclusion: It can be concluded that the hydroalcoholic extract of S. montana showed significant antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.

The goal of this research is to determine what chemicals are present in two different extracts (hexane and acetone) of Vicia faba (family Fabaceae, VF) peels and evaluate their effectiveness as a corrosion inhibitor on mild steel in a saline media containing 3.5% sodium chloride. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the composition of various extracts. It was determined that fourteen different chemicals were present in the hexane extract, the most prominent of which were octacosane, tetrasodium tetracontane, palmitic acid, and ethyl palmitate. Heptacosane, lauric acid, myristic acid, ethyl palmitate, and methyl stearate were some of the 13 chemicals found in the acetone extract. Using open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarisation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic techniques, we can approximate the inhibitory effects of (VF) extracts on mild steel. The most effective inhibitory concentrations were found to be 200 ppm for both the hexane and acetone extracts (97.84% for the hexane extract and 88.67% for the acetone extract). Evaluation experiments were conducted at 298 K, with a 3.5% (wt/v) NaCl content and a flow velocity of about 250 rpm. Langmuir adsorption isotherm shows that the two extracts function as a mixed-type inhibitor in nature. Docking models were used to investigate the putative mechanism of corrosion inhibition, and GC/MS was used to identify the major and secondary components of the two extracts. Surface roughness values were calculated after analyzing the morphology of the metal's surface with and without (VF) using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that throughout the surface of the mild steel, a thick adsorbate layer was formed. Quantum chemical calculations conducted on the two extracts as part of the theoretical research of quantum chemical calculation demonstrated a connection between the experimental analysis results and the theoretical study of the major chemical components.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of Silybum marianum (S. marianum) seeds extract its oil fraction against damage effect of γ-radiation in female albino rats.Methods: Ultrasonic-assisted extraction was used for the extraction of S. marianum seeds. Lipid patterns of S. marianum seeds oil were elucidated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). S. marianum seeds extract was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and metallothionein (MT) were estimated in heart and brain tissues of the examined rats. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase-MB (CKMB) were measured in the serum of the examined rats, and the brain biomarkers; dopamine and serotonin were also measured. Results:The oil was found to be rich in linoleic acid (58.20%) and arachidic acid (23.38%). S. marianum seeds extract revealed the presence of taxifolin and six main active constituents of silymarin, including silydianin, silychristin, silybin A, silybin B, isosilybin A and isosilybin B. Treatment of γ-radiation damage effect using S. marianum seeds extract and its oil fraction led to a significant reduction of MDA levels in heart (139.6 and 165.5 nmol/g, respectively) and brain (158.5 and 135.2 nmol/g, respectively) tissues, however, significant increase of GSH levels in heart (316.4 and 293 mg/g, respectively) and brain (210.4 and 227 mg/g, respectively) tissues was observed, also a significant increase of dopamine levels (85.27 and 65.74 ng/g, respectively) and MT levels of heart tissues (108.5 and 70.52 mg/g, respectively) was observed. Conclusion:S. marianum seeds extract and its oil fraction showed a protective effect against γ-radiation-induced damage in heart and brain.

Background The most common species in the Satureja genus is Satureja montana (family Lamiaceae). The present work aims to use the molecular docking study to predict the isolated constituents against an immune system immunomodulator and tested alcoholic extract as an in-vitro immunomodulatory agent. Methods All isolated compound's structures were determined using various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant profiles were studied for an alcoholic extract of the plant; the molecular docking study was performed for the isolated compounds (1–4). Results In this work, four recognized compounds were extracted from the ethyl acetate fraction of S. montana (Sm) methanolic extract and identified as two triterpenes ursolic acid (1) and oleanolic acid (2), one phenolic acid as ellagic acid (3), and one flavonoidal compound as isoscutellarein (4). The total alcoholic extract exhibited good in vitro anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and apoptotic activity. Its IC50 was 10.12 compared to 15.1 μg/ml of standard celecoxib. It also showed potent antioxidant activity with IC50 10.4, 11.3, 14.6, and 22.3 IU/ml for SOD, MDA, catalase, and TAC, respectively. According to the drug similarity and ADMET tests, their ligands may have favorable pharmacokinetic characteristics with minimal carcinogenic influence. The molecular docking study was performed for the isolated compounds (1–4). Conclusions The alcoholic extract of the plant showed promising anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiapoptotic properties. The theoretical studies for the isolated compounds showed promising binding affinity against all the examined enzymes.

The glucosinolates (Gls.) are natural bioactive compounds which lead to the formation of different metabolites called isothiocyanates(ITC) having various therapeutic effects. So, this study aim to isolate the glucosinolates of both Carrichtera annua L.(DC) (CA) and Farsetia aegyptia Turra (FA) belonging to Crucifereae family. The total Gls. were isolated from the aqueous methanolic extract of both plants and further purified on acidic aluminum oxide column. Some of the obtained Gls. was identified as it is using different spectroscopic measurements (UV, NMR and MS) and the rest were hydrolyzed using myrosinase enzyme to the corresponding isothiocyanates (ITC) which were identified by GC/MS. only one glucosinolate was identified in CA as: 4-methylthio-3-butenyl Gls ( MTBG). through chromatographic and spectroscopic measurements in addition to 6-methyl sulfonylhexyl isothiocyanates(ITC), while 6-methyl sulfonyl-6-hydroxy hexyl ITC, 4-pentenyl ITC, 3-Methylthio propyl ITC, 5-hydroxy pentyl ITC and 4-methylsulphinyl butyl ITC from FA. The docking study targeted a α-glucosidase and amylase, to examine a mode of action of the 4-methylthio-3-butenylglucosinolate. Molecular docking was performed to identify potency of Gls. against hyperglycemia. The data obtained revealed that the Gls. has high binding activity Via α-glucosidase and amylase. Furthermore, further Drug studies as likeness and ADME/T were performed, which proposed that their ligands may be have a good pharmacokinetic character, with no carcinogenesis effect.
