Objective: This work aimed to investigate the lipid constituents and flavonoidal compounds of Satureja montana, in addition to evaluation of different extracts and/or isolated compounds as antimicrobials and antioxidants.Methods: The volatile and lipid constituents were extracted with n-hexane by partition from hydroalcoholic extract of S. montana L. aerial parts, after then were fractionated to unsaponifiable matters and fatty acid methyl esters which were identified by gas–liquid chromatography and/or gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The phenolic constituents were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of the aqueous methanolic extract of the aerial parts of the plant. The antimicrobial activity of different extracts and the isolated compounds was evaluated against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungus using a modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.Results: The identified compounds are luteolin-7-rhamnoside-4’-O-β-glucopyranoside (1), quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (2), quercetin- 7-O-glucopyranoside (3), luteolin-7-O-glucopyranoside (4), 5-hydroxy-6,7,8,4’-tetramethoxy flavone (5), gallic acid (6), 2,3-hexahydroxydiphenoyl 1-galloyl glucopyranoside (7), and quercetin (8). The structure of all isolated compounds was established using different chromatographic and spectroscopic measurements (PC, thin-layer chromatography, ultraviolet [UV], 1D, 2D-nuclear magnetic resonance, and MS). Compound-2 showed the highest antibacterial activity against all the tested microorganisms. Hydroalcoholic extract exhibited high antioxidant activity (87.7%). On the other hand, hexane fraction showed a low antioxidant activity (46.4%), in addition to the compound-8 showed the highest antioxidant activity (96.27%) in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay.Conclusion: It can be concluded that the hydroalcoholic extract of S. montana showed significant antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.

In this study, extracts of the flowers of the folk medicinal plant Bombax malabaricum DC were biologically and chemically screened. Chemical constituents in the n-hexane fraction from the flowers of B. malabaricum DC were investigated using gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) analysis, affording 14 compounds, including cholesterol, stigmasterol, campesterol and α-amyrin, while the residual 10 compounds are hydrocarbons. GLC analysis of the fatty acid (FA) esters established the majority abundance of the saturated FA over their unsaturated analogues. The polar methanol fraction afforded seven flavones: vicenin 2 (1), linarin (2), saponarin (3), cosmetin (4), isovitexin (5), xanthomicrol (6) and apigenin (7). Structures 1-7 were established by intensive studies of various spectral data (H-NMR, mass spectroscopy and UV) and comparison with authentic samples. Compounds 1-7 are described here for the first time from this plant. Extracts of n-hexane and methanol exhibited significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

The objective of the present work was to establish the antimicrobial activity of four species of Melaleuca (i.e. Melaleuca leucandron, Melaleuca armillaris, Melaleuca linarifolia, & Melaleuca ericifolia) methanolic extracts and five species of Syzygium (i.e., Syzygium samaragense, Syzygium jambos, Syzygium gratum, Syzygium paniculatum & Syzygium malaccense). While Melaleuca armillaris’ methanolic extract consists of 30 compounds comprising 97.66%, with Veridiflorol (18.36%) and Globulolol compounds being the key compounds (12.57 percent ).

Chemical investigation of the Red Sea soft coral Sarcophyton glaucom collected at the coasts of Hurghada, Egypt, led to the isolation of one new naturally occurring 4-oxo-1,1′-pentanoic acid anhydride (1), along with four diterpenes; sarcophinone (2a), 8-epi-sarcophinone (2b), (+)-7α,8β-dihydroxydeepoxysarcophine (3), sinumaximol G (4), (+)-sarcophine (5), sesquiterpene; prostantherol (6), sterol; 3β,24S-ergost-5-en-ol (7) and hexadecanoic acid. The structures of the obtained compounds were established using diverse spectroscopic techniques including 1D and 2D NMR and HRMS. Biologically, in vitro cytotoxic activities of diterpenes 2–5 and prostantherol (6) were studied against the liver cancer HEPG2 cell line in comparison with the soft coral extract and doxorubicin as reference (IC50: 4.28 μg/mL). Compounds 2–6 exhibited potent–moderate cytotoxicity of IC50 between 9.97 μg/mL [for sinumaximol G (4)] and 17.84 μg/mL [for (+)-7α,8β-dihydroxydeepoxysarcophine (3)], whereas that for soft coral extract was determined at 24.71 μg/mL.
