Tel est l'objet de cette analyse qui vise à démontrer que la publicité est, au-delà de sa fonction économique, un phénomène social qui peut fournir par son hyper-ritualisation des modèles identitaires dans un certain type de société. Ce qui nous amènera à analyser la logique discursive de la publicité et à éclairer les liens existant entre celle-ci, les individus, la consommation d'objet et la société moderne. Mais avant d'y parvenir, il nous semble opportun de faire le point sur les recherches portant sur cette communication de masse qu'est la publicité et sur son insertion dans le corps social. Quelle est donc, dira-ton , l'utilité (toute relative, nous l'admettons) de ce développement épistémologique ? Si nous nous attardons sur ces recherches et études, c'est pour montrer comment, érigée en phénomène social, la publicité reste un objet sociologique en quête de légitimité. Ce qui n'est pas insinuer que la publicité n'ait pas été l'apanage d'interrogations sociologiques (quoique, en France, très rarement), mais que ses interrogations se sont toujours inscrites dans le même cheminement de pensée. Quelques repères dans l'histoire des traditions de pensées suffisent à s'en rendre compte.
