Objective: This paper investigates the impact of the 2020 Covid-19 related Spring Lockdown in Italy on families practicing shared physical custody (SPC) arrangements for their children. Background: Those family configurations partly challenge the dominant 'mother as main carer model' that characterizes Italian society. Here, we consider the lockdown as a "challenge-trial" to analyze the strategies that these families have developed to cope with lockdown, and to reveal the overarching structures that contributed to shape this experience of lockdown. Method: We draw on semi-structured interviews with 19 parents (9 fathers and 10 mothers), part of 12 families practicing SPC. Results: We propose a typology of custody re-organizations during lockdown and how this affected the division of parental involvement based on a) change/no change in sleepover calendars in favor of mother/father; and b) similar/different arrangements for siblings – a new practice that emerged and also has implications for the division of childcare between parents. Four types are identified where we emphasize new parenting practices and the role played by material housing configurations, relations and tensions between family members, as well as balancing work, school and childcare. Conclusion: We highlight the usefulness of applying a "challenge-trial" lens to the study of family life under lockdown, and the need to complexify research on gender equality in shared parenting and on sibling relationships in post-divorce families.

Cadre de la recherche : Le chez-soi a été l’objet de nombreuses analyses montrant son importance dans le processus d’individualisation, mais il a peu été étudié dans ses difficultés et ses tensions. Cet article se centre sur ces aspects. Objectifs : Il vise à montrer comment le chez-soi peut être une source d’épreuves pour les individus et donc conduire à de nombreuses contraintes ou vicissitudes dans l’expérimentation de soi et l’appropriation de sa vie. Méthodologie : L’analyse repose sur une enquête qualitative de type compréhensive, basée sur 40 entretiens semi-directifs menés en coprésence ou à distance auprès d’individus issus de la classe moyenne, plutôt jeunes, actifs, habitant pour l’essentiel à Paris et en Île-de-France, dans des appartements dont ils sont en général les locataires. Résultats : À partir des données de cette enquête, l’article dégage quatre types d’épreuves, relevant des processus d’installation, d’appropriation, de sa gestion ou de sa perte. Il montre ainsi comment les difficultés dans son accès, ses changements, sa personnalisation, son invasion, la pénibilité de ses tâches et son rapport aux objets, aussi bien que sa perdition (réelle ou symbolique) sont des épreuves qui peuvent conduire au sentiment de déstabilisation, de désappropriation, de fatigue et de la ruine de soi. Conclusions : Les épreuves du chez-soi conduisent donc à questionner la notion du refuge de soi que le chez-soi incarne dans l’imaginaire moderne, notamment dans ses dimensions de repaire et de repères. Contribution : Cet article veut attirer l’attention sur le fait que le chez-soi est devenu une source d’épreuves quotidiennes. Quelque peu sous-estimés en raison de la crise du logement, ses problèmes constituent une réalité dont les enjeux sont cruciaux au regard du processus de l’individualisation dans la construction et la propriété de soi.
