Summary Cases of mycoplasma abortion in pigs A large number of mycoplasma abortions in pigs in one herd are described. A microbiological study was made of 63 spontaneously‐aborted foetuses and a pathological study of 45. In addition 14 piglets born dead or failing to survive from 8 experimentally‐infected sows were examined. From the organs of the aborted foetuses and placentas Mycoplasma hyorhinis and Mycoplasma granularum were isolated. Macroscopic examination of the foetuses showed no characteristic changes. Pathological examination of the internal organs usually showed hyperaemia, haemorrhages and oedema. The common finding was vacuolar dystrophy of the cells of the media and adventitia of the blood vessels of the internal organs and occasionally proliferation of the intima. There were characteristic diffuse and focal collections of plasma cells and lymphocytes, frequently in the form of perivascular proliferations. Changes in the placenta and umbilical cord were mainly hyperaemia, oedema and degenerative‐inflammatory processes with diffuse infiltration of lymphocytic and plasma cells.
Summary The pathomorphology and pathogenesis of streptococcal abortion in cattle The aetiological significance of Str. uberis as the cause of abortion is confirmed. In this form of abortion the following changes are seen: In the foetus: atelectic pneumonia, septic spleen and lympho‐lymphocytic infiltration of the liver and kidney. In the placenta: acute placentitis with bacterial emboli with collections of leucocytes around them. In the uterus: necrotic arteritis, metritis, parametritis with encapsulated abscesses and adhesion of the uterus to the pelvic wall. Infection of the foetus occurs by the intra‐uterine route by penetration of the wall by the streptococci.
