Javanese house tradition grows and develops along time. In the modern era, the development of materials technology, both from the Javanese community and from the European experts, has influenced the way to build a house among the Javanese community. Visible changes are so radical in the use of materials and structural system of the building that they influence the look and shape of the house. The purpose of this research is to study the form transformation in the growth of modern Javanese houses at Kampung Batik Laweyan Surakarta. Laweyan is the traditional Javanese kampung already existing in the Kingdom Pajang long before the birth of Surakarta. Morphological analysis was used to understand deformation of modern Javanese homes developed by the generations of batik entrepreneurs in the 20 th century. Indicators of 'the Javanese origin' in modern Javanese houses are seen from the consistency of the traditional house configuration, indicated by spatial structure of pendopo, dalem, and gandok. The conclusion is that some Javanese principles still remain in developing modern houses in Laweyan, namely: (1) a house should always be developed creatively to give comfort and protection; and (2) a house should always give benefit and wealth to the owner.
Javanese architecture has transformed from vernacular tradition to modern. The outward appearance of modern Javanese houses in Laweyan seems heavily influenced by European styles because they are more permanent and are considered less suitable for a tropical climate. However, these houses are the work of the Laweyan people which are based on the Javanese house principle of ‘shelter’ architecture and are in harmony with the climate. This study attempts to understand the philosophical basis of the Javanese people in building houses. The method used in this study is a qualitative case study that seeks to uncover the vernacular concepts shaping some modern Javanese houses in Laweyan. This research has identified several vernacular strategies in the development of modern Javanese homes i.e., 1) responding to the tropical climate by using traditional Javanese architecture; 2) applying up-to-date construction technology and materials; 3) recycling used materials and elements from the past to remember and honor ancestral heritage. This paper concludes that the vernacularity of the Laweyan house does not always conflict with tradition. It has even enriched traditional knowledge, namely the principle of memetri and has helped the Javanese people in realizing their ideal homes that still adhere to traditions.
Cultural tourism is being intensified in every kampong (village) in Surakarta. Baluwarti is a cultural tourism kampong situated in the palace area where the nobles dwell. However, the internal conflict among these nobles affects the kampong’s tourism management system. Therefore, the main focus of this research is to find an architectural model of tourism management utilizing the nobles’ houses. This model, furthermore, is created by building synergy with stakeholders, initiated by communities in conflicted areas. Participatory Action Research in the form of FGD was performed to create a dialogue format with the community. Completeness of data and information were obtained through field observations, in-depth interviews and providing related documents. The result of the research displayed three models of tourism management in the conflicted area, namely: 1) The Management Model for Tourism Management in Restricted Areas, 2) The Development Model for Cultural Tourism Kampongs, 3) The Integration Model between Tourism Potential and Tourism Economic Activities. These models can be proposed to the government to encourage the development of heritage tourism industries in conflicted areas.
