Kuda Sandalwood merupakan bagian dari alat aktivitas adat istiadat di pulau Sumba yang memiliki fungsi sosial, ekonomi dan budaya. Pemilihan kuda pacu seringkali dilakukan secara subyektif, dengan melihat warna rambut, pusaran pada tubuh kuda, garis keturunan, dan garis pada bibir kuda. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keragaman morfometri dan ukuran dari 40 ekor kuda yang mengikuti lomba pacuan kuda. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan mengikuti cara yang dilakukan Wibisono (2017). Selanjutnya data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan Analisis Faktor. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa ada keragaman morfometri kuda pacu Sandalwood di pulau Sumba. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan keragaman terbesar terdapat pada panjang mandibula (0,919), tinggi badan (0,832), tebal badan (0,952), lebar badan (0,876), panjang badan (0,919), dan panjang ekor (0,868).
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui prevalensi dan faktor risiko trypanosomiasis pada kuda di Sumba Timur. Sampel yang digunakan berupa darah dari 286 ekor kuda yang diambil di Wilayah Barat dan Timur Kabupaten Sumba Timur. Pengambilan sampel darah dilakukan melalui vena jugularis. Diagnosa trypanosomiasis dilakukan dengan pemeriksaan preparat ulas darah tipis yang diwarnai Giemsa 10%. Faktor risiko trypanosomiasis dipelajari dengan menyebar kuisioner yang dibuat khusus kepada para peternak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 2,10% sampel positif Trypanosoma evansi. Distribusi kejadiannya menyebar di Kecamatan Lewa (3,65%), Kecamatan Kota Waingapu (1,72%), dan Kecamatan Pahunga Lodu (7,4%). Peluang terjadinya infeksi trypanosomiasis berdasarkan nilai OR adalah: umur kuda lebih dari 5 tahun (OR=3,185), ketersediaan/asal air minum (OR=2,821), cara pemeliharaan digembalakan (OR=2,179), jenis kelamin betina (OR=1,256), lokasi/asal kuda di wilayah barat (OR=1,022), lalu-lintas ternak yang padat (OR=0,979), dan pengetahuan peternak tentang surra (OR=0,222). Secara statistik faktor risiko tersebut tidak berbeda nyata (P>0,05). Dengan demikian, perlu dilakukan survailens aktif dan pengendalian trypanosomiasis pada kuda di Kabupaten Sumba Timur. Perlu juga dilakukan penelitian lanjutan dengan metode diagnostik yang lain, seperti card agglutination test (CATT).
Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) merupakan inflamasi yang menimbulkan rasa nyeri dan sering terjadi pada rongga mulut kucing. Hewan kasus adalah seekor kucing ras lokal, jenis kelamin jantan, berumur empat tahun, bobot berat badan 5,5 kg, dan rambut berwarna kuning putih. Pemilik datang dengan keluhan kucing mengalami penurunan nafsu makan dan minum, dan satu minggu sebelumnya kucing sempat memuntahkan makanan ketika diberi pakan kering serta kucing terlihat kesulitan mengunyah makanannya. Pada pemeriksaan klinis rongga mulut teramati terdapat peradangan pada gusi dari bagian kranial hingga kaudal. Peradangan pada mukosa mulut terjadi bilateral dan terlihat jelas adanya ulserasi, kemerahan, kebengkakan dan ketidak nyamanan kucing saat dilakukan pembukaan rongga mulut. Kucing kasus didiagnosis sebagai gingivostomatitis dengan prognosis fausta. Disamping itu pPada rongga telinga bagian dalam terlihat kotoran serumen kering berwarna coklat kehitaman. Pemeriksaan mikroskopis atas kotoran kering ditemukan tungau parasit Otodectes cynotis. Pengobatan terhadap gingivostomatitis dilakukan dengan pemberian dexamethasone 0,50 mg/kg BB (satu kali sehari) selama lima hari injeksi, cefotaxime 330 mg/kg BB (dua kali sehari) selama tujuh hari injeksi, infus RL selama tujuh hari, dan multivitamin hematodin 0,2 mL/kg BB (sekali sehari) selama tiga hari injeksi. Satu minggu pasca pengobatan, hewan kasus berangsur pulih dan terjadi kesembuhan. Terhadap infestasi infeksi O. cynotis diberikan pengobatan tetes telinga illium ear drops (dua kali sehari) selama satu minggu. Pada pemeriksaan serumen kotoran telinga setelah seminggu, tungau O. cynotis tidak ditemukan. Pengobatan yang diberikan terhadap gingivostomatitis hanya bersifat simtomatis tetapi tidak pada agen penyebab infeksi secara kausatif sehingga kasus berulang pada tujuh hari setelah pengobatan dilakukan sehingga dianjurkan untuk dilakukan cabut/ekstraksi gigi.
