Fluoride balances were determined in healthy adult males under metabolic ward conditions. This is the first fluoride study to use the diffusion method in exploring the balances of subjects ingesting basal (i.e., everyday) diets with deionized water for cooking and drinking. Certain groups were given daily supplements of 5 or 10 mg. fluoride as sodium fluoride in divided doses with meals. Fluoride was measured in the diets, sodium fluoride tablets, urine, feces, and serum. Approximately 90% of the fluoride excreted was found in the urine and the remainder in the feces in all groups. In the control subjects, fluoride balances were uniformly negative (mean of -0.40 mg/day); in contrast, balances were uniformly positive (mean of +1.38 and +2.88 mg/day, respectively) in subjects receiving 5 or 10 mg F supplements daily. Serum ionic fluoride concentration increased proportionally to fluoride intake and averaged 0.016, 0.029, and 0.040 ppm in the control, 5-mg and 10-mg groups, respectively. These fluoride supplements did not cause any clinical or laboratory abnormality in any subjects.
The artificial cultivation of Ganoderma lucidum (MTCC1039) using Artocarpus heterophyllus as sawdust substrate was optimized and free radical scavenging activities of the generated fruiting bodies were investigated. The choice of A. heterophyllus as substrate was due to its easy availability in South India. Sawdust supplemented with dextrose medium yielded better spawn hyphae and early fruiting body initiation (15 days). The biological yield obtained was 42.06 ± 2.14 g/packet and the biological efficiency was 8.41 ± 0.48%. Both aqueous and methanolic extracts of fruiting body were analyzed for radical scavenging activity. Methanolic extract showed maximum scavenging activity for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (IC50 = 290 μg/ml) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline- 6-sulphonic acid (IC50 = 580 μg/ml), whereas aqueous extract had better scavenging for ferric reducing antioxidant power (IC50 = 5 μg/ml). Total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity were significantly higher in methanolic extract (p < 0.01). A positive correlation existed between the phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Our results indicated that fruiting bodies of G. lucidum cultivated in sawdust medium possess antioxidant property, which can be exploited for therapeutic application.
Healthy men with a daily intake of 0.37 mg fluoride were given dichloromethylene diphosphonate (Cl2MDP) or a placebo during a period of ambulation followed by bed rest. In both groups, serum ionic fluoride was unchanged, and fluoride balances were negative, but Cl2MDP significantly reduced loss of fluoride in the treated groups.
The present study was carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of ethanol leaf extract of Capparis diversifolia using carrageenan induced paw edema method in rats. The anti-inflammatory activity of ethanol leaf extract in 200mg/kg b.wt and 400mg/kg b.wt at 3hours of administration was compared with reference standard drug, Indomethacin 100mg/kg b.wt. Maximum anti-inflammatory effect was exhibited in 400mg/kg b.wt. The present study confirms the traditional usage of C. diversifolia for anti-inflammatory activity and supports the isolation and use of phytoconstituents with anti-inflammatory activity from C. diversifolia.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
